A RESOLUTION encouraging the United States Postal Service to honor 1 
Muhammad Ali with a stamp of his likeness. 2 
WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service honors many notable Americans by 3 
creating postage stamps of their likeness; and 4 
WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali, a native Kentuckian born and raised in Louisville, 5 
has been decorated for his successful career as a professional boxer and nicknamed "The 6 
Greatest" for being one of the most significant figures in the 20th century; and 7 
WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali was named Sportsman of the Century by Sports 8 
Illustrated in 1999 and Sports Personality of the Century by the BBC; and 9 
WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali won a gold medal at the age of 18 in the 1960 10 
Olympics and later captured the boxing world heavyweight title. Out of 61 boxing 11 
matches, he won 56, 37 by knockout, and lost only 5; and 12 
WHEREAS, while Muhammad Ali was known for his ability as a boxer, he was 13 
also celebrated for his work outside of boxing. He was a conscientious objector to the 14 
Vietnam War due to his Muslim faith and ethical opposition to the war. He was also a 15 
high profile figure of racial pride for African Americans during the civil rights movement 16 
in the United States and throughout the world; and 17 
WHEREAS, the former heavyweight boxing champion changed the conversation 18 
about race, religion, politics, and sports in America; and 19 
WHEREAS, after his retirement from boxing in 1981, Muhammad Ali continued to 20 
be active in his religion, philanthropy, and activism even after his diagnosis of 21 
Parkinson's disease in 1984; and 22 
WHEREAS, the world was devastated when Muhammad Ali passed away on June 23 
3, 2016; and 24 
WHEREAS, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer and Lonnie Ali, Muhammad Ali's 25 
widow, began a campaign for Muhammad Ali to be celebrated by having a stamp with his 26

WHEREAS, Muhammad Ali once stated, "I should be a postage stamp. That's the 1 
only way I'll ever get licked."; 2 
NOW, THEREFORE, 3 
Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 4 
Kentucky: 5 
Section 1. The members of the Senate hereby encourage the United States 6 
Postal Service to honor and celebrate the life of one of Kentucky's greatest legends by 7 
creating a postal stamp with the likeness of "The Greatest," Muhammad Ali. 8 
Section 2. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 9 
resolution to the United States Postal Service, Office of the Consumer Advocate, 475 10 
L'Enfant Plaza SW, Room 4012, Washington, DC 20260-2200 and to Senator Morgan 11 
McGarvey to present to the City of Louisville and the family of Muhammad Ali. 12
