A JOINT RESOLUTION designating a portion of Kentucky Route 345 in Christian 1
county as the Gold Star Families Memorial Highway. 2
WHEREAS, on May 28, 1918, President Woodrow Wilson approved a 3
recommendation made by the Women's Committee of the Council of National Defenses 4
that, instead of wearing conventional mourning dress for relatives who died in the service 5
of the country, American women should wear a black band with a Gold Star on the band 6
for each member of the family who has given his or her life for the nation; and 7
WHEREAS, since World War I, service flags, adorned with gold stars, have been 8
displayed at homes, places of business, churches, and schools in honor of the family, 9
organization, or community that lost a loved one during active service to his or her 10
country; and 11
WHEREAS, the national organization of American Gold Star Mothers, Inc., was 12
founded by Grace Darling Seibold and was established in 1928 as a nondenominational, 13
nonprofit, and nonpolitical organization; and 14
WHEREAS, the members of the Gold Star Mothers and Gold Star Families 15
epitomize the spirit and commitment that are characteristic of true Kentuckians and serve 16
as catalysts for positive change and increased compassion in our communities; and 17
WHEREAS, this General Assembly finds it appropriate to pause in its deliberations 18
to acknowledge and applaud the members of the Gold Star Mothers and Gold Star 19
Families for their dedication to the country, the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and its 20
citizens; 21
NOW, THEREFORE, 22
Be it resolved by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky: 23
ď˘Section 1. The Transportation Cabinet shall designate Kentucky Route 345 in 24
Christian County, from its start at the state line with Tennessee to the intersection with 25
Kentucky Route 107, as "The Gold Star Families Memorial Highway," and shall, within 26
30 days of the effective date of this Resolution, erect appropriate signs denoting this 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 23 RS BR 45
