UNOFFICIAL COPY 23 RS BR 1481 Page 1 of 2 XXXX 2/14/2023 3:42 PM Jacketed A JOINT RESOLUTION designating the Colonel Vermont Garrison Memorial 1 Highway. 2 WHEREAS, Vermont Garrison was born on October 29, 1915, in Mount Victory, 3 Pulaski County, Kentucky; and 4 WHEREAS, Vermont Garrison made his education a priority, even through the 5 Great Depression, graduating from Pulaski County public schools in 1933 and attending 6 Eastern Kentucky State Teachers College, now Eastern Kentucky University; and 7 WHEREAS, Vermont Garrison earned a teaching certificate from Sue Bennett 8 Junior College in London, and went on to teach elementary school in a one room 9 schoolhouse from 1936 until 1941; and 10 WHEREAS, on March 17, 1941, Vermont Garrison enlisted in the aviation cadet 11 program of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). Before he completed his 12 training, he joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) in Dallas, Texas. After he was shipped off 13 to England he was promoted to Flying Officer and made a gunnery instructor; and 14 WHEREAS, Vermont Garrison transferred from the RAF back to the USAAF in 15 1943 and was assigned to the 4th Fighter Group, where he went on to down seven 16 German planes before being shot down by ground fire, earning him the title of Ace; and 17 WHEREAS, Vermont Garrison spent a year as a prisoner of war before the camp, 18 Stalag Luft I, was liberated by the Soviet Army in May 1945; and 19 WHEREAS, during the Korean War, Vermont Garrison continued his career in the 20 military as the commander of the 335th Fighter Squadron, and earned the title of Double 21 Ace; and 22 WHEREAS, Vermont Garrison was one of only seven pilots to become an Ace in 23 both World War II and Korea and was promoted to the rank of Colonel in 1961; and 24 WHEREAS, Colonel Vermont Garrison served in the Vietnam War as Vice Wing 25 Commander of the 8th Tactical Fighter Wing, as well as several other command 26 positions, and earned the title of Triple Ace during his aerial operations; and 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 23 RS BR 1481 Page 2 of 2 XXXX 2/14/2023 3:42 PM Jacketed WHEREAS, Colonel Vermont Garrison retired from the military in 1973 after 1 serving combat tours in three wars and earning his spot as one of the greatest Air Force 2 pilots of all time; and 3 WHEREAS, Colonel Vermont Garrison passed away February 14, 1994, after a 4 long life and accomplished military career serving his country, and it is appropriate that 5 the General Assembly tangibly recognize his life of service; 6 NOW, THEREFORE, 7 Be it resolved by the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Kentucky: 8 ď˘Section 1. The Transportation Cabinet shall designate Kentucky Route 192 in 9 Pulaski County, from its intersection with Blaze Valley Road to its intersection with East 10 Mt. Vernon Street, as the "Col. Vermont Garrison Memorial Highway" and shall, within 11 30 days of the effective date of this Resolution, erect the appropriate signage. 12
