A RESOLUTION honoring the Frederick Douglass High School Broncos football 1 
team, 2022 Kentucky High School Athletic Association Class 5A Champions. 2 
WHEREAS, on December 3, 2022, in front of a crowd of 6,461 fans at Kroger 3 
Field on the campus of the University of Kentucky, the Frederick Douglass Broncos 4 
defeated the Purples of Bowling Green High School by a score of 28 to 7 to capture the 5 
2022 Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) Class 5A Football 6 
Championship; and 7 
WHEREAS, the championship game was a low-scoring contest until the Broncos 8 
seized control on Ty Bryant's one yard touchdown run to grab a 14 to 7 lead with just 9 
over four minutes left in the third quarter. The Broncos then tacked on two fourth quarter 10 
touchdown passes by quarterback Cole Carpenter to secure the championship; and 11 
WHEREAS, for his stellar play on both offense and defense, which included 42 12 
rushing yards and a touchdown, as well as a key goal line interception of a Bowling 13 
Green pass on the Purples' first offensive series, the Broncos' Ty Bryant was named the 14 
Most Valuable Player of the championship game; and 15 
WHEREAS, other Broncos offensive standouts in the championship game included 16 
running backs TJ Horton and Devaun Hart, who ran for 108 and 52 yards, respectively; 17 
receivers Tylon Webb, Cameron Dunn, and Thomas Howard, who each caught a 18 
touchdown pass; and quarterback Cole Carpenter, who threw for 149 yards and three 19 
touchdowns; and 20 
WHEREAS, key players for the Broncos' defense included linebacker Tresean 21 
Benford, who had 5.5 tackles, including a sack and 1.5 tackles for loss; linebacker Darion 22 
Neal, who had 4.5 tackles; and defensive back Isaiah Kenney, who had 2.5 tackles and an 23 
interception; and 24 
WHEREAS, the victory in the championship game capped off what was not only a 25 
perfect season for the Broncos, with a record of 15 wins against no losses, but a 26 
dominating one that saw the Broncos outscore their opponents on the season by an 27  UNOFFICIAL COPY  	23 RS BR 1776

average of 44 to 5 and win every game by at least 12 points; and 1 
WHEREAS, throughout the season, the Broncos featured a balanced, high-scoring 2 
offense which averaged 163 yards a game through the air and 156 yards per game on the 3 
ground; and 4 
WHEREAS, this Broncos team featured an historically great defense, especially in 5 
the current high-scoring era of high school football, yielding only 70 points the entire 6 
season, posting four shutouts, and allowing only one opponent to score more than 10 7 
points; and 8 
WHEREAS, this is the Broncos' first state championship in football in the school's 9 
six-year history, having been Class 5A state runners-up in in 2019 and 2021. It also 10 
marked the first time a Fayette County public school won a state football championship 11 
since 1981; and  12 
WHEREAS, several Broncos were honored for their stellar play throughout the 13 
season by being named in a poll of coaches across the state to the Louisville Courier-14 
Journal's 2022 All-State Team, including first team defensive back Ty Bryant, second 15 
team defensive lineman Jamarrion Harkless, third team offensive lineman Demeco 16 
Kennedy, and honorable mention selections running back TJ Horton, defensive lineman 17 
Jalen Hand, linebacker Darion Neal, defensive back Isaiah Kenney, and punter Cooper 18 
Ranvier; and 19 
WHEREAS, the Broncos were led to the championship by head coach Nathan 20 
McPeek, who, in his three seasons as a head coach, has compiled a record of 35 wins 21 
against only 4 losses; and 22 
WHEREAS, assisting Coach McPeek were defensive coordinator Jeffrey Poe, 23 
assistant coaches William Catron, Jr., Devon Daniel, John Gilliam, Evander Harris, 24 
Jatyuan Landing, Taylor Peoples, James Skinner, III, and strength coach Ed Towle, Jr.; 25 
and 26 
WHEREAS, the talent, dedication, tenacity, and teamwork shown by the Frederick 27  UNOFFICIAL COPY  	23 RS BR 1776

Douglass Broncos on their state championship journey sets a worthy example for young 1 
athletes across the Commonwealth, and it is wholly appropriate that they be publicly 2 
recognized for their hard work and achievements; 3 
NOW, THEREFORE, 4 
Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 5 
Kentucky: 6 
Section 1. The members of the Senate join Senator Jared Carpenter in 7 
congratulating the Frederick Douglass Broncos and coach Nathan McPeek upon winning 8 
the 2022 KHSAA Class 5A Football championship, heralding their teams many 9 
accomplishments, and wishing all team members, coaches, and staff good fortune in all 10 
future endeavors. 11 
Section 2.   The Clerk of the Senate shall transmit a copy of this Resolution to 12 
Senator Jared Carpenter for presentation to the team. 13
