A RESOLUTION honoring Tim Belcher for the extraordinary gift of life through 1
the donation of his kidney. 2
WHEREAS, in 1954 the first successful transplant of a human organ, which was a 3
kidney, into another human was accomplished; and 4
WHEREAS, the unwritten covenant among firefighters is the preservation of 5
property and life, and that covenant is honored every day when the claxon is answered, 6
boots and turnout gear are donned, fires and other dangers are mitigated, and persons, 7
pets, and livestock are rescued from harm; and 8
WHEREAS, in 2021, John Sexton, the son of Lexington Fire Department 9
Lieutenant Joseph Sexton, was diagnosed with a rare disease that damaged his kidneys 10
and subsequently caused him to need a kidney transplant; and 11
WHEREAS, aware of John's need, Tim Belcher, a fellow Lexington Fire 12
Department firefighter and close friend of the family, underwent testing to see if he could 13
donate his kidney to John; and 14
WHEREAS, after a positive match, an unexpected confluence of firefighting, 15
medical advances, duty, love, and friendship occurred: Tim Belcher successfully donated 16
his kidney to John in January of 2023; and 17
WHEREAS, it is fitting that selfless acts such as that of Tim Belcher are lauded 18
publicly and held forth as examples for all the citizens of the Commonwealth to emulate; 19
NOW, THEREFORE, 20
Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 21
Kentucky: 22
Section 1. The Senate honors Tim Belcher for his exceptional and selfless act of 23
compassion and love through the donation of his kidney to John Sexton. 24
Section 2. The Senate furthermore holds forth this selfless act as a worthy 25
example of the finest conduct by a citizen of this Commonwealth and denotes this 26
esteemed act as worthy of emulation by the balance of the citizens of the Commonwealth. 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 23 RS BR 1055

Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 1
Resolution to Senator Amanda Mays Bledsoe for presentation to Tim Belcher in 2
recognition of his selfless act of compassion and love. 3
