UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 2022 Page 1 of 2 XXXX 2/14/2024 10:09 AM Jacketed A RESOLUTION adjourning the Senate in honor and loving memory of Carolyn 1 Marie Davenport Allen. 2 WHEREAS, Carolyn Marie Davenport Allen was born on November 23, 1931, in 3 Owingsville, Kentucky, to the late Robert and Lydia Mattison; and 4 WHEREAS, Carolyn Allen graduated from high school in Mount Sterling, 5 Kentucky, and attended Western Kentucky Beauty School in Paducah, Kentucky; and 6 WHEREAS, while in Paducah, Carolyn Allen met the love of her life, Howard 7 Edward Allen. Early in their marriage, the couple moved to Cheyenne, Wyoming, where 8 Howard was stationed with the United States Air Force; and 9 WHEREAS, Carolyn and Howard Allen relocated from Wyoming to St. Martins 10 Village in Lexington, Kentucky, to be closer to family. There, they welcomed their two 11 daughters, Neva and Pamela, creating a loving and nurturing Christian home that 12 emphasized education; and 13 WHEREAS, upon moving to St. Martins Village, Carolyn Allen began working at 14 Roberta's Beauty Salon. Once established in Lexington, she changed career paths to work 15 in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Kentucky, where she had a 16 successful 38-year career. Carolyn loved being responsible for ordering seeds, petri 17 dishes, and all the supplies needed to make greenhouses flow and grow. She became a 18 staple to the department, and was well-loved and respected; and 19 WHEREAS, Carolyn Allen was an active member and secretary of Phillips 20 Memorial Christian Methodist Episcopal Church for many years. Later in life, she moved 21 her membership to Veaches Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Paris, 22 Kentucky, as a dedicated supporter and worker; and 23 WHEREAS, Carolyn Allen was a member of the Red Hat Society and was elected 24 Vice Queen of her chapter. Although many of the club's members were closely 25 associated, Carolyn developed a special bond with Bonita Smith; and 26 WHEREAS, Carolyn Allen battled cancer for 46 years, and she survived breast, 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 2022 Page 2 of 2 XXXX 2/14/2024 10:09 AM Jacketed bone, bladder, and lung cancer. During her journey, she paved the way as the first cancer 1 patient to be given the revolutionary treatment option, CyberKnife, in 2007. In late 2023, 2 a second round of breast cancer metastasized to bone cancer, after which the doctors and 3 nurses at Baptist Health carried her through her final stages with grace and dignity; and 4 WHEREAS, Carolyn Allen was preceded in death by her loving husband, Howard; 5 her siblings, Roberta Davenport and Maceo Davenport; and her Aunt Alice and Uncle 6 Dotson; and 7 WHEREAS, Carolyn Allen is survived by her two daughters, Neva (Beecher) 8 Hudson and Pamela Ellison; two adopted daughters, Nancy (Miles) Miller and Sheila 9 Hightower; two granddaughters, Nicole Hudson and Mykelle (Jayson) Fuller; grandson, 10 B. Allen Hudson; four great-grandchildren, Cameron Hudson, Blake Hudson, Breighton 11 Fuller, and Jayson Fuller; two first cousins, Henrietta Burdette and Peggy Ann Franklin; 12 special friends, Ulla Järlfors and Barbara Coughlin; and a host of nieces, nephews, and 13 friends who will deeply miss her; and 14 WHEREAS, Carolyn Allen will be remembered as a jewel that will sparkle for 15 eternity; 16 NOW, THEREFORE, 17 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 18 Kentucky: 19 Section 1. The Senate hereby extends its most profound sympathy upon the 20 passing of Carolyn Marie Davenport Allen and expresses heartfelt condolences to her 21 family in this time of loss. 22 Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor and loving 23 memory of Carolyn Marie Davenport Allen. 24 Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 25 Resolution to Senator Reginald Thomas for delivery to the family. 26
