UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 1453 Page 1 of 2 XXXX 1/10/2024 11:11 AM Jacketed A RESOLUTION recognizing Leland "Lee" Smith of the Kentucky State Police 1 Facilities Security Division on the occasion of his retirement. 2 WHEREAS, Lee Smith is a long-time resident of Kentucky, having graduated from 3 Campbellsville College in 1982 with a Bachelor's of Science in History and Christian 4 Studies; and 5 WHEREAS, during his time at Campbellsville College, Lee Smith served as 6 Married Housing Director, Baptist Student Union President, and Head Delegate for Mock 7 Model United Nations in St. Louis in 1977; and 8 WHEREAS, Lee Smith joined the Army in 1982 where he served in active duty for 9 10 years and in the Army Reserve for an additional 10 years; and 10 WHEREAS, Lee Smith first served as Executive Officer of the 4th Student 11 Training Company and then as supervisor of the Ammunition Handling MOS Training 12 Section of the Conventional Ammunition Division. He also served in Germany at the 13 Munitions Material Management Office; and 14 WHEREAS, Lee Smith was awarded Battalion Soldier of the Quarter in 1983 and 15 earned runner-up for Battalion Soldier of the Division. While in advanced infantry 16 training, his company commander recommended that he go to Officer Candidate School; 17 and 18 WHEREAS, Lee Smith began his military career as an enlisted man and retired 19 from military service as a Major in 2002; and 20 WHEREAS, Lee Smith has worked with Facilities Security under the Kentucky 21 State Police since August 8, 2011. He has worked at the Capitol Annex tunnel for the last 22 seven years where he earned recognition from the Kentucky House of Representatives in 23 March of 2023; and 24 WHEREAS, Lee Smith announced his retirement from Facilities Security effective 25 February 1, 2024, bringing to a conclusion an honorable career of service protecting 26 legislators, employees, and visitors of the Capitol Annex; 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 1453 Page 2 of 2 XXXX 1/10/2024 11:11 AM Jacketed NOW, THEREFORE, 1 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 2 Kentucky: 3 Section 1. The Senate does hereby recognize and commend Leland "Lee" Smith 4 for an outstanding and honorable career and extends its best wishes for a well-deserved 5 retirement. 6 Section 2. When the Senate adjourns this day, it does so in honor of Leland 7 Smith. 8 Section 3. The Clerk of the Senate is directed to transmit a copy of this 9 Resolution to Senator Donald Douglas for presentation to Leland "Lee" Smith. 10
