UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 1703 Page 1 of 2 XXXX 1/24/2024 8:30 AM Jacketed A RESOLUTION recognizing January 27, 2024, as International Holocaust 1 Remembrance Day. 2 WHEREAS, the Holocaust was the state-sponsored, systematic persecution and 3 attempted annihilation of European Jewry by Nazi Germany and its collaborators 4 between 1933 and 1945 – six million Jews were murdered; and 5 WHEREAS, the history of the Holocaust offers an opportunity to reflect on the 6 moral responsibilities of individuals, societies, and governments; and 7 WHEREAS, we the people of the Commonwealth of Kentucky should always 8 remember the terrible events of the Holocaust and remain vigilant against hatred, 9 persecution, and tyranny; and 10 WHEREAS, in the aftermath of the October 7, 2023, atrocities, the bloodiest day in 11 Jewish history since the Holocaust, we are reminded of the vow Never Again; and 12 WHEREAS, rising antisemitism in the United States makes clear the need for 13 continued vigilance and dedication to the principles of individual freedom in a just 14 society; and 15 WHEREAS, on November 1, 2005, the UN General Assembly adopted resolution 16 60/7 to designate January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day to correspond 17 with the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, and it is meant to honor the 18 victims of Nazism and to condemn all forms of "religious intolerance, incitement, 19 harassment or violence against persons or communities based on ethnic origin or 20 religious belief" throughout the world; 21 NOW, THEREFORE, 22 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly of the Commonwealth of 23 Kentucky: 24 Section 1. The members of the Senate hereby recognize January 27, 2024, as 25 International Holocaust Remembrance Day, in memory of the victims of the Holocaust 26 and in honor of the survivors as well as the rescuers and liberators, and further proclaim 27 UNOFFICIAL COPY 24 RS BR 1703 Page 2 of 2 XXXX 1/24/2024 8:30 AM Jacketed that we, as citizens of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, should work to promote human 1 dignity and confront antisemitism and hate whenever and wherever it occurs. 2
