BOARDS/COMMISSIONS:  Changes the membership of the La. Emergency Medical
Services Certification Commission
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 40:1232.2(B)(1)(introductory paragraph) and (b) and to enact2
R.S. 40:1232.2(B)(1)(d) and (e), relative to the Louisiana Emergency Medical3
Services Certification Commission; to provide for membership; to provide for a date4
for change of certain membership; and to provide for related matters.5
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:6
Section 1. R.S. 40:1232.2(B)(1)(introductory paragraph) and (b) are hereby amended7
and reenacted and R.S. 40:1232.2(B)(1)(d) and (e) are hereby enacted to read as follows:8

B.(1) The commission shall be composed of nine eleven voting members13
appointed by the governor as follows:14

(b)  Two certified emergency medical technician-paramedics and one16
emergency medical technician-basic, at least one of whom shall be a full-time17
employee of a fire department, who are certified as emergency medical services18
instructors by the bureau. Until November 6, 2011, or the member's resignation from19

Subparagraph shall be a full-time employee of a fire department.  After November1
6, 2011, or the member's resignation from the commission, at least one of the2
members as provided in this Subparagraph shall be appointed by the Louisiana Fire3
Chiefs Association.4

(d) One member nominated by the Louisiana Municipal Association.6
(e) One member nominated by the Professional Firefighters Association of7

Abstract: Changes the composition of the La. Emergency Medical Services Certification
Commission from nine members to 11 members. Requires that one of the members
be appointed by the La. Fire Chiefs Association. Adds a member nominated by the
La. Municipal Association and a member nominated by the Professional Firefighters
Association of La.
Present law provides that the La. Emergency Medical Services Certification Commission
shall be composed of nine voting members appointed by the governor.
Proposed law adds two members to change the composition of the commission to 11 voting
members appointed by the governor.
Present law provides that the voting members of the commission shall be composed of two
emergency medical services administrators, including one representing the private sector and
one representing the public sector; two certified emergency medical technician-paramedics
and one emergency medical technician-basic, at least one of whom shall be a full-time
employee of a fire department, who are certified as emergency medical services instructors
by the bureau; four physicians, one each from the American College of Emergency
Physicians, the American College of Surgeons, the La. State Medical Society, and the
American Academy of Pediatrics.
Proposed law retains present law and changes the requirement that a member be a full-time
employee of a fire department by providing that, after the current term is finished or the
member resigns, a member shall be appointed by the La. Fire Chiefs Association.
Proposed law adds two members, one nominated by the La. Municipal Association and one
nominated by the Professional Firefighters Association of La.
