Regular Session, 2010 HOUSE BILL NO. 1296 BY REPRESENTATIVE SCHRODER HOLIDAYS: Provides relative to the use of leave for observance of legal holidays AN ACT1 To enact R.S. 1:55(B)(6), relative to days of public rest and legal holidays; to provide for the2 use of annual or compensatory leave or unpaid leave for the observance of legal3 holidays; and to provide for related matters.4 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5 Section 1. R.S. 1:55(B)(6) is hereby enacted to read as follows: 6 ยง55. Days of public rest, legal holidays, and half-holidays7 * * *8 B. Legal holidays shall be observed by the departments of the state as9 follows:10 * * *11 (6) A worker in the classified or unclassified service of the state may observe12 the legal holidays provided for in Subparagraph (1)(a) of this Subsection by either13 using annual or compensatory leave or unpaid leave insofar as it may be practicable14 in the administration of the government.15 * * *16 Section 2. Present law provides that the following legal holidays shall be observed by the departments of the state insofar as may be practicable for the administration of the government: New Year's Day; Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s Birthday which shall be observed on the third Monday of Jan. of each year or in conjunction with the day of the federal observance; Mardi Gras Day; Good Friday; Independence Day; Labor Day; Veterans' Day; Thanksgiving Day; Christmas Day; Inauguration Day once in every four years in the city of Baton Rouge; and General Election Day every two years. Proposed law provides that a worker in the classified or unclassified service of the state may observe present law legal holidays observed by the departments of the state by either using annual or compensatory leave or unpaid leave insofar as it may be practicable in the administration of the government. Effective Aug. 15, 2010, and made null and void on Aug. 14, 2011, and thereafter unless reenacted by the legislature. (Adds R.S. 1:55(B)(6))
