COURTS/CITY:  Increases the civil jurisdictional amount in dispute in the certain city
courts
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact Code of Civil Procedure Article 4843(C), (D), (E), (F), and (G),2
relative to the civil jurisdiction of city courts; to increase the civil jurisdictional3
amount in dispute in the City Court of Baker, in the City Court of Baton Rouge, in4
the City Court of Crowley, in the City Court of Rayne, and in the City Court of5
Zachary; and to provide for related matters.6
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:7
Section 1. Code of Civil Procedure Article 4843(C), (D), (E), (F), and (G) are hereby8
amended and reenacted to read as follows: 9
Art. 4843. City court jurisdiction; amount in dispute; injunctive actions by state or10
political subdivision11

C. In the City Court of Bossier City, the City Court of Lafayette, the City13
Court of Ville Platte, and any city court in which the population of the territorial14
jurisdiction is less than fifty thousand, except as otherwise specifically provided by15
law, the civil jurisdiction is concurrent with the district court in cases where the16
amount in dispute, or the value of the property involved, does not exceed fifteen17
thousand dollars.18
D. In the City Court of Baton Rouge and the City Court of Houma, the civil19
jurisdiction is concurrent with the district court in cases where the amount in dispute,20
or the value of the property involved, does not exceed twenty thousand dollars.21 HLS 10RS-435	REENGROSSED

E. In the City Court of Abbeville, the City Court of Baker, the City Court of1
Bogalusa, the City Court of Bunkie, the City Court of Eunice, the City Court of2
Kaplan, the City Court of Lake Charles, the City Court of Marksville, the City Court3
of Monroe, the City Court of Natchitoches, a city court in New Orleans, the City4
Court of Opelousas, the City Court of Plaquemine, the City Court of Port Allen, the5
City Court of Ruston, the City Court of Shreveport, the City Court of Sulphur, and6
the City Court of Winnsboro, and the City Court of Zachary, the civil jurisdiction is7
concurrent with the district court in cases where the amount in dispute, or the value8
of the property involved, does not exceed twenty-five thousand dollars.9
F. In the City Court of Crowley, City Court of Hammond, the City Court of10
Jennings, and the City Court of Oakdale, and the City Court of Rayne, the civil11
jurisdiction is concurrent with the district court in cases where the amount in dispute,12
or the value of the property involved, does not exceed thirty thousand dollars.13
G. In the City Court of Baker, the City Court of Baton Rouge, City Court of14
Leesville, the City Court of Minden, the City Court of Springhill, and the City Court15
of Slidell, and the City Court of Zachary the civil jurisdiction is concurrent with the16
district court in cases where the amount in dispute, or the value of the property17
involved, does not exceed thirty-five thousand dollars.18

Abstract: Increases the civil jurisdictional amount in dispute for the City Court of Crowley
and the City Court of Rayne 	from $15,000 to $30,000, for the City Court of Baker
and the City Court of Zachary from $25,000 to $35,000, and for the City Court of
Baton Rouge from $20,000 to $35,000.
Present law provides that the civil jurisdiction of a city court in which the population of the
territorial jurisdiction is less than 50,000 is concurrent with the district court in cases where

Present law provides that the civil jurisdiction of specified city courts ranges from $15,000
to $35,000 and, in two city courts, to an amount not to exceed the amount that gives rise to
the right to demand a jury trial. 
Proposed law increases the civil jurisdictional amount in dispute for the City Court of
Crowley and the City Court of Rayne 	from $15,000 to $30,000.
Proposed law increases the civil jurisdictional amount in dispute for the City Court of Baker
and the City Court of Zachary 	from $25,000 to $35,000.
Proposed law increases the civil jurisdictional amount in dispute for the City Court of Baton
Rouge from $20,000 to $35,000.
