SCHOOLS/BOARDS: Provides relative to the notification given to parents regarding
school dress code policies
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 17:416.7, relative to school boards; to require school boards to2
notify parents prior to implementing new school uniform policies or changing3
existing school uniform policies; to provide for exceptions; and to provide for related4
matters.5
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:6
Section 1.  R.S. 17:416.7 is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:7
ยง416.7.  Dress codes; authorization; notification requirement 8
 A.(1) Each city, or parish, or other local public school board may adopt such9
rules and regulations as it deems necessary to require implement a school dress code,10
which may includes include the use of uniforms. Each school may select a uniform11
for its students and shall display such uniform for a reasonable period prior to the12
beginning of each school year. proposed effective date of the dress code.13
(2) If a city, or parish, or other local public school board chooses to require14
adopts a school dress code,  as provided in this Section it shall notify, in writing, the15
parent or guardian of each school student of the dress code specifications and their16
effective date.17
(3) If a city, parish, or other local public school board adopts a new uniform18
policy or to modify an existing uniform policy, it shall notify, in writing, the parent19

modification at least sixty days prior to the effective date of the policy or1
modification to the policy.2
B.(1) Nothing in this Section shall prohibit a city, parish, or other local public3
school board from requiring a new dress code or uniform policy or modifying an4
existing dress code or uniform policy without providing the required notice in the5
event of what the school board deems an emergency.  For the purposes of this6
Subsection, "emergency" means an actual or imminent threat to health or safety7
which may result in loss of life, injury, or property damage.8
(2) Nothing herein in this Section shall require the additional expenditure of9
school or school board funds.10

Abstract: Provides relative to the notification given to parents regarding school dress code
policies.
Present law authorizes a public school board to adopt a school dress code, including
uniforms. Requires that the board notify parents regarding the specifications of the policy
and its effective date.  Proposed law retains present law.
Present law provides that if the board adopts a uniform, the board shall display the uniform
prior to the beginning of each school year.  	Proposed law requires such display for a
reasonable time prior to the effective date of the policy.
Proposed law provides specifically with respect to uniform policies. Requires the board to
notify the parents in writing at least 60 days prior to the effective date of an adoption or
modification of a uniform policy.
Proposed law provides an exception from the notification requirements of present law and
proposed law if there is an emergency.
