Regular Session, 2010 HOUSE BILL NO. 151 BY REPRESENTATIVE CARMODY SCHOOLS/TRANSPORTATI ON: Authorizes the Bossier and Caddo parish school boards, in accordance with specified guidelines and limitations, to transport to school any student who resides one mile or less from the school AN ACT1 To amend and reenact R.S. 17:158(A)(3), to authorize the Bossier Parish School Board and2 the Caddo Parish School Board to transport to school any student who resides one3 mile or less from the school; to provide conditions and limitations; to provide an4 effective date; and to provide for related matters.5 Notice of intention to introduce this Act has been published as6 provided by Article III, Section 13 of the Constitution of7 Louisiana.8 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:9 Section 1. R.S. 17:158(A)(3) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:10 ยง158. River Parish School Board, the Sabine Parish School Board, the Vernon Parish School1 Board, the West Baton Rouge Parish School Board, the West Carroll Parish School2 Board, the West Feliciana Parish School Board, and the Winn Parish School Board3 may provide transportation for any student attending a school of suitable grade4 approved by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education within the5 jurisdictional boundaries of the parish or school board who resides one mile or less6 from the school when the school board determines that conditions exist to warrant7 such transportation. Transportation of students residing one mile or less from their8 school shall be at no cost to the state.9 * * *10 Section 2. This Act shall become effective on July 1, 2010; if vetoed by the governor11 and subsequently approved by the legislature, this Act shall become effective on July 1, 2010,12 or on the day following such approval by the legislature, whichever is later.13 DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services. Present law (R.S. 17:158(A)(2) and (3)) authorizes 15 specified local public school boards to provide transportation for any student attending a school of suitable grade approved by the State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education within the jurisdictional boundaries of the local board who resides one mile or less from the school when the school board determines that conditions warrant the transportation. Specifies that such transportation shall be at no cost to the state. Proposed law retains present law and additionally authorizes the Bossier Parish School Board and the Caddo Parish School Board to provide such transportation in accordance with present law guidelines and limitations. Effective July 1, 2010. (Amends R.S. 17:158(A)(3))
