INSURANCE/GROUP-SHERI FFS:  Provides for payment of group insurance for retired
sheriffs and deputy sheriffs of the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 33:1448(O), relative to premium costs of group hospital and2
health insurance for retired sheriffs and retired deputy sheriffs in St. Charles Parish;3
to provide for eligibility for payment of premium costs; and to provide for related4
matters.5
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:6
Section 1.  R.S. 33:1448(O) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows: 7
ยง1448.  Group insurance; kinds; amounts; subrogation8

O. Notwithstanding the provisions of Subsection D of this Section, in the10
parish of St. Charles, one hundred percent of the premium costs of group hospital,11
surgical, and medical expense insurance and the first ten thousand dollars of life12
insurance contracted for under the provisions of this Section shall be paid from the13
sheriff of St. Charles Parish shall pay out of the sheriff's general fund the premium14
cost of group insurance for any sheriff or full-time deputy sheriff who has retired15
from the St. Charles Parish sheriff's office Sheriff's Office and who is entitled to16
receive monthly benefits from the Sheriff's Pension and Relief Fund and who has17
either of the following as follows:18
(1)  For any sheriff or deputy sheriff who was hired before July 1, 2010, one19

dental insurance, and the first ten thousand dollars of life insurance contracted for1
pursuant to the provisions of this Section, if the sheriff or deputy sheriff retired with2
either of the following:3
(a) At least fifteen years of full-time creditable service with the St. Charles4
Parish sheriff's office Sheriff's Office and is at least fifty-five years of age.5
(2)(b) At least thirty years of full-time creditable service with the St. Charles6
Parish sheriff's office Sheriff's Office, regardless of age.7
(2) For any sheriff or deputy sheriff who was hired after July 1, 2010, the8
sheriff of St. Charles Parish shall pay the premium cost of group hospital, surgical,9
medical expense, dental insurance, and the first ten thousand dollars of life insurance10
contracted pursuant to the provisions of this Section, if the sheriff or deputy sheriff11
retired as follows:12
(a) One hundred percent if retired with at least thirty years of full-time13
creditable service with the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office, regardless of age.14
(b) Seventy-five percent if retired with at least twenty-five years of full-time15
creditable service with the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office and is at least fifty-five16
years of age.17
(c) Fifty percent if retired with at least twenty years of full-time creditable18
service with the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office and is at least fifty-five years of19
age.20

Abstract: Provides for the payment of insurance premiums for retired sheriffs and deputy
sheriffs with creditable service with the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office.
Present law provides that the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, medical expense,
and dental insurance and the first $10,000 of life insurance shall be paid in full from the
sheriff's general fund for all sheriffs and deputy sheriffs retired with at least 15 years of
service who are at least 55 years of age or retired with at least 30 years of service at any age. HLS 10RS-685	ORIGINAL

Proposed law retains present law for sheriffs and deputy sheriffs hired before July 1, 2010.
Proposed law provides that for all sheriffs and deputy sheriffs who are hired after July 1,
2010, premium costs shall be paid at 100% for retired sheriffs and deputy sheriffs with 30
years of service regardless of age, 75% for retired sheriffs and deputy sheriffs with 25 years
of service and who are at least 55 years of age, and 50% for retired sheriffs and deputy
sheriffs with 20 years of service and who are at least 55 years of age.
