TRANSPORTATION DEPT: Removes requirement that contractors erect certain signs on
DOTD construction projects
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 48:256.2, relative to construction signage; to remove the2
requirement that contractors post certain signs near projects; and to provide for3
related matters.4
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5
Section 1.  R.S. 48:256.2 is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:6
ยง256.2.  Signs to be posted by contractor Reduce speed limit signs; removal7
A. Any contractor who is under contract for the construction of or8
improvements to highways and bridges under the control of the Department of9
Transportation and Development shall erect at the site of the project a sign which10
shall be clearly legible from a distance of not less than two hundred feet and which11
shall display the name of the contractor to whom the project contract has been12
awarded and the scheduled project completion date and may include any additional13
information regarding delays or extensions. The sign shall be erected prior to the14
first day of work on the project and shall not be removed until the project has been15
completed and final inspection has been approved by the department. This signage16
requirement shall not apply to any project that has a cost of less than one million17
dollars. The provisions of this Section shall in no way conflict with any federal18

B. Any contractor who is under contract for the construction, maintenance,1
or improvements to highways, bridges, or other public works under the control of the2
Department of Transportation and Development shall remove signs which indicate3
a reduced speed limit in construction areas not later than thirty days after final4
acceptance of the project by the department.  In the event that the project work is5
performed by the Department of Transportation and Development personnel, then6
the reduced speed limit signs shall be removed not later than thirty days after the7
work activity on the project ceases.8

Abstract: Removes the requirement that contractors post certain signs near projects. 
Present law requires contractors who are under contract with DOTD for the construction or
improvement of highways and bridges to erect a sign which shall be clearly legible from a
distance of not less than 200 feet. Present law requires the sign to include the contractor's
name, the scheduled completion date, and any other information relative to extensions and
delays.  Present law requires the sign to be erected prior to the first day of work and shall not
be removed until the project is complete and DOTD has approved, by inspection.
Proposed law removes present law.
