Regular Session, 2010 HOUSE BILL NO. 847 BY REPRESENTATIVE WOOTON CRIME: Amends the crime of removing or altering vehicle identification numbers AN ACT1 To amend and reenact R.S. 14:207(A), relative to the crime of alteration or removal of2 identifying numbers on motor vehicles; to provide for the elements of the crime; to3 include trailers; and to provide for related matters.4 Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5 Section 1. R.S. 14:207(A) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows: 6 ยง207. Motor vehicles, alteration or removal of identifying numbers prohibited; sale,7 etc., of motor vehicle with altered identifying numbers prohibited; penalty;8 application of Section 9 A. No person shall cover, remove, deface, alter, or destroy the10 manufacturer's number or any other distinguishing number or identification mark on11 any motor vehicle, or motor vehicle part, or trailer as defined by R.S. 32:1 for the12 purpose of concealing or misrepresenting its identity; nor shall any person buy, sell,13 receive, dispose of, conceal, or knowingly have in his possession any motor vehicle,14 or motor vehicle part, or trailer as defined by R.S. 32:1 from or on which the15 manufacturer's number or any other distinguishing number or identification mark has16 been covered, removed, defaced, altered, or destroyed for the purpose of concealing17 or misrepresenting its identity.18 * * *19 HLS 10RS-1720 ENGROSSED HB NO. 847 Page 2 of 2 CODING: Words in struck through type are deletions from existing law; words underscored are additions. Present law provides that no person shall cover, remove, deface, alter, or destroy the manufacturer's number or any other distinguishing number or identification mark on any motor vehicle or motor vehicle part, for the purpose of concealing or misrepresenting its identity. Further provides that no person shall buy, sell, receive, dispose of, conceal, or knowingly have in his possession any motor vehicle or motor vehicle part from or on which the manufacturer's number or any other distinguishing number or identification mark has been covered, removed, defaced, altered, or destroyed for the purpose of concealing or misrepresenting its identity. Proposed law adds trailers to present law and otherwise retains present law. (Amends R.S. 14:207(A))
