HLS 10RS-2404 ORIGINAL Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2010 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 108 BY REPRESENTATIVE AUSTIN BADON SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH: Recognizes Wednesday, April 14, 2010, as Adult Education Awareness Day A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To recognize Wednesday, April 14, 2010, as Adult Education Awareness Day at the2 Louisiana State Capitol.3 WHEREAS, in 2000, more than eight hundred thousand adults in Louisiana reported4 having not obtained a high school diploma; and5 WHEREAS, the 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy found that6 approximately thirty million American adults, including approximately five hundred7 thousand in Louisiana, have low literacy skills; and8 WHEREAS, many children have problems in school if their parents are unable to9 read, and one of the greatest predictors of a child's academic success is the literacy level of10 his or her mother; and11 WHEREAS, many people drop out of school due to poverty-rela ted family12 circumstances, and obtaining a General Educational Development (GED) credential is an13 important step toward better jobs, further training, and postsecondary education; and 14 WHEREAS, events planned by local support organizations such as the Louisiana15 Literacy Alliance seek to focus attention on the fundamental role of literacy in all aspects16 of the health and well-being of Louisiana citizens; and17 WHEREAS, it is appropriate to set aside a special day in recognition of the18 importance of literacy and adult education in Louisiana.19 HLS 10RS-2404 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 108 Page 2 of 2 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby1 recognize Wednesday, April 14, 2010, as Adult Education Awareness Day at the Louisiana2 State Capitol.3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the4 directors of the Greater Baton Rouge Literacy Coalition and Literacy Alliance of Greater5 New Orleans.6 DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services.
