ENROLLED Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2010 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 108 BY REPRESENTATIVE AUSTIN BADON A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To recognize Wednesday, April 14, 2010, as Adult Education Awareness Day at the Louisiana State Capitol. WHEREAS, in 2000, more than eight hundred thousand adults in Louisiana reported having not obtained a high school diploma; and WHEREAS, the 2003 National Assessment of Adult Literacy found that approximately thirty million American adults, including approximately five hundred thousand in Louisiana, have low literacy skills; and WHEREAS, many children have problems in school if their parents are unable to read, and one of the greatest predictors of a child's academic success is the literacy level of his or her mother; and WHEREAS, many people drop out of school due to poverty-related family circumstances, and obtaining a General Educational Development (GED) credential is an important step toward better jobs, further training, and postsecondary education; and WHEREAS, events planned by local support organizations such as the Louisiana Literacy Alliance seek to focus attention on the fundamental role of literacy in all aspects of the health and well-being of Louisiana citizens; and WHEREAS, it is appropriate to set aside a special day in recognition of the importance of literacy and adult education in Louisiana. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Wednesday, April 14, 2010, as Adult Education Awareness Day at the Louisiana State Capitol. ENROLLEDHCR NO. 108 Page 2 of 2 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be transmitted to the directors of the Greater Baton Rouge Literacy Coalition and Literacy Alliance of Greater New Orleans.
