HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 125
BY REPRESENTATIVE ANDERS
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To memorialize the United States Congress to direct the United States Department of
Agriculture and the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation to take such actions as are
necessary to establish a viable crop insurance program for Louisiana sweet potato
farmers.
WHEREAS, agriculture is the production of food and goods through farming, and
the agriculture industry continues to contribute significantly to the economy of the state; and
WHEREAS, farming is vitally important to the sustenance of all people and is one
of the most important occupations in the world; and
WHEREAS, families have lived on many of the state's farms for generations
following a preferred way of life even though it means hard work, long hours, high risks, and
sometimes low incomes; and
WHEREAS, many communities depend on agriculture and forestry for local jobs and
economic well-being; and
WHEREAS, Louisiana is among the top sweet potato-producing states in the United
States with a gross farm value of more than $48 million; and
WHEREAS, each production season has associated risks and adverse weather
conditions and the nature of the current recession has dampened consumer confidence and
decreased demand in the food sector; and
WHEREAS, crop insurance would protect farmers against either the loss of their
crops due to natural disasters or loss of revenue due to the decline in prices of agricultural
commodities.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
memorialize the United States Congress to direct the United States Department of ENROLLEDHCR NO. 125
