HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 146
BY REPRESENTATIVE WHITE
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Recognizes May 9-15, 2010, as Police Week and May
15, 2010, as Peace Officers Memorial Day, commends law enforcement officers, and
encourages all citizens to join in the week's commemorative tributes
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To recognize May 9 through May 15, 2010, as Police Week and May 15, 2010, as Peace2
Officers Memorial Day, to commend law enforcement officers, and to encourage all3
citizens to join in the week's special commemorative tributes.4
WHEREAS, the president and Congress of the United States of America have5
annually designated May fifteenth as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which6
May fifteenth falls as Police Week; and7
WHEREAS, members of law enforcement agencies in Louisiana unceasingly provide8
a vital public service by playing an essential role in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of9
the state's citizens; and10
WHEREAS, police and peace officers protect the people of Louisiana twenty-four11
hours a day and seven days a week; and 12
WHEREAS, these brave individuals selflessly put themselves in harm's way to assure13
the safety of the lives and property of the people of Louisiana; and 14
WHEREAS, law enforcement officers daily earn respect and gratitude in their15
persistent and untiring efforts on behalf of all Louisiana citizens; and 16
WHEREAS, it is important that all citizens know and understand the duties,17
responsibilities, hazards, and sacrifices of law enforcement officers and that members of law18
enforcement agencies recognize their duty to serve the people by safeguarding life and19 HLS 10RS-3577	ORIGINAL

property, by defending them against violence and disorder, and by protecting the innocent1
against deception and the weak against oppression; and2
WHEREAS, law enforcement officers are guardians of life and property, defenders3
of the individual right to be free citizens, warriors in the war against crime, and dedicated4
to the preservation of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; and5
WHEREAS, law enforcement officers fulfill a great calling in upholding the rule of6
law in society, choosing their profession and taking their oath knowing that theirs is a7
dangerous job, accepting these risks, answering the call of duty, and demonstrating a8
willingness to serve that reflects all that is good about Louisiana and America; and 9
WHEREAS, Louisiana law enforcement officers merit a sincere measure of10
commendation for their remarkable service and steadfast commitment to securing and11
preserving the welfare and safety of their fellow citizens; and12
WHEREAS, in May of 2010, the members of the Legislature of Louisiana join the13
president and congress in honoring Louisiana's law enforcement officers and their families14
during Police Week and on Peace Officers Memorial Day. 15
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby16
recognize May 9 through May 15, 2010, as Police Week and May 15, 2010, as Peace17
Officers Memorial Day, does hereby commend the state's law enforcement officers for their18
noble and exemplary accomplishments, and does hereby express to them the enduring19
appreciation of the legislature for the pride and the tremendous honor they bring to the state20
of Louisiana.21
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the legislature hereby urges all citizens of22
Louisiana and all patriotic, civic, and educational organizations to observe the week of May23
9 through May 15, 2010, as Police Week with appropriate ceremonies and observances in24
which all people may join in commemorating law enforcement officers, past and present,25
who, by their faithful and loyal devotion to their responsibilities, have rendered a dedicated26
service to their communities and, in so doing, have established for themselves an enduring27
legacy of preserving the rights and security of all citizens.28
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the legislature encourages all citizens of the state29
to observe May 15, 2010, as Peace Officers Memorial Day in honor of those law30 HLS 10RS-3577	ORIGINAL

enforcement officers who, through their courageous deeds, have made the ultimate sacrifice1
in service to their communities or have become disabled in the performance of duty and to2
recognize and pay respect to these heroes.3
