HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 149
BY REPRESENTATIVE KATZ AND SENATOR MOUNT
ATHLETICS: Commends Durand "Rudy" Macklin on the retirement of his basketball
jersey number by Louisiana State University and for his outstanding achievements
in promoting physical fitness and sports in Louisiana
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To commend Durand "Rudy" Macklin on the retirement of his basketball jersey number by2
Louisiana State University and for his outstanding achievements in promoting3
physical fitness and sports in Louisiana.4
WHEREAS, Mr. Macklin is an all-time great on the Louisiana State University5
(LSU) basketball court; and6
WHEREAS, his LSU basketball career spanned the years 1976 through 1981, during7
which he was a two-time All American; and8
WHEREAS, he concluded his LSU basketball career as the second-leading scorer9
in team history behind only Pete Maravich; and10
WHEREAS, he remains the leading rebounder in team history; and11
WHEREAS, he helped lead the 1980-1981 LSU Men's basketball team to a school12
record of thirty-one wins and an appearance in the NCAA Final Four that season; and13
WHEREAS, his accomplishments on the court helped to change the course of LSU14
basketball in the 1970s and led to a resurgence of interest in basketball at LSU; and15
WHEREAS, one of the highest honors in any sport is for a player to have his jersey16
number retired, and this honor is particularly rare at LSU; and17
WHEREAS, on February 6, 2010, Mr. Macklin's number 40 jersey was retired to the18
rafters of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, joining the retired jerseys of LSU greats19
Shaquille O'Neal, Bob Pettit, and Pete Maravich; and20 HLS 10RS-3609	ORIGINAL

WHEREAS, Mr. Macklin currently serves as the director of both the Governor's1
Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and the Bureau of Minority Health Access in the2
Department of Health and Hospitals; and3
WHEREAS, in these positions, he has worked tirelessly to help adults and children4
throughout Louisiana to become more physically fit and lead healthier lives through5
innovative and fun initiatives such as the Governor's Games, Lighten Up Louisiana, and6
Lighten Up Louisiana Youth; and7
WHEREAS, he has built and added to these programs year after year, turning them8
into events that can compete with those of any state in the nation; and9
WHEREAS, his efforts to promote physical fitness and sports in this state have10
cemented his place as a Louisiana legend; and11
WHEREAS, Mr. Macklin merits a special measure of commendation for the12
tremendous pride and honor that he brings to the LSU community, the city of Baton Rouge,13
and the state of Louisiana for his accomplishments both on and off the basketball court.14
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby15
commend Mr. Durand "Rudy" Macklin for his outstanding accomplishments as an athlete16
and leader in promoting physical fitness and education in this state.17
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby18
recognize and record for posterity the outstanding and unique contributions of Mr. Macklin19
to physical fitness and sports in Louisiana, and does hereby extend best wishes for continued20
success in all of his endeavors.21
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted22
to Mr. Durand "Rudy" Macklin.23
