HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 149
BY REPRESENTATIVE KATZ AND SENATORS MOUNT AND THOMPSON
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To commend Durand "Rudy" Macklin on the retirement of his basketball jersey number by
Louisiana State University and for his outstanding achievements in promoting
physical fitness and sports in Louisiana.
WHEREAS, Mr. Macklin is an all-time great on the Louisiana State University
(LSU) basketball court; and
WHEREAS, his LSU basketball career spanned the years 1976 through 1981, during
which he was a two-time All American; and
WHEREAS, he concluded his LSU basketball career as the second-leading scorer
in team history behind only Pete Maravich; and
WHEREAS, he remains the leading rebounder in team history; and
WHEREAS, he helped lead the 1980-1981 LSU Men's basketball team to a school
record of thirty-one wins and an appearance in the NCAA Final Four that season; and
WHEREAS, his accomplishments on the court helped to change the course of LSU
basketball in the 1970s and led to a resurgence of interest in basketball at LSU; and
WHEREAS, one of the highest honors in any sport is for a player to have his jersey
number retired, and this honor is particularly rare at LSU; and
WHEREAS, on February 6, 2010, Mr. Macklin's number 40 jersey was retired to the
rafters of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, joining the retired jerseys of LSU greats
Shaquille O'Neal, Bob Pettit, and Pete Maravich; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Macklin currently serves as the director of both the Governor's
Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and the Bureau of Minority Health Access in the
Department of Health and Hospitals; and
WHEREAS, in these positions, he has worked tirelessly to help adults and children
throughout Louisiana to become more physically fit and lead healthier lives through ENROLLEDHCR NO. 149

innovative and fun initiatives such as the Governor's Games, Lighten Up Louisiana, and
Lighten Up Louisiana Youth; and
WHEREAS, he has built and added to these programs year after year, turning them
into events that can compete with those of any state in the nation; and
WHEREAS, his efforts to promote physical fitness and sports in this state have
cemented his place as a Louisiana legend; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Macklin merits a special measure of commendation for the
tremendous pride and honor that he brings to the LSU community, the city of Baton Rouge,
and the state of Louisiana for his accomplishments both on and off the basketball court.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
commend Mr. Durand "Rudy" Macklin for his outstanding accomplishments as an athlete
and leader in promoting physical fitness and education in this state.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
recognize and record for posterity the outstanding and unique contributions of Mr. Macklin
to physical fitness and sports in Louisiana, and does hereby extend best wishes for continued
success in all of his endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to Mr. Durand "Rudy" Macklin.
