CONDOLENCES: Expresses sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of La. State
Representative Avon R. Honey
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To express the sincere and heartfelt condolences of the members of the Legislature of2
Louisiana upon the death of Avon R. Honey and their enduring gratitude for his3
outstanding contributions to East Baton Rouge Parish and the state of Louisiana,4
particularly during his tenure as a distinguished member of the Louisiana House of5
Representatives.6
WHEREAS, it was with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the7
legislature learned of the death of their colleague and dear friend, Avon R. Honey, on Friday,8
February 12, 2010, at the age of sixty-two; and9
WHEREAS, the son of the late Sam and Matilda Flowers Honey, Avon Ray Honey10
was born on May 1, 1947, in Baton Rouge, and attended North Scotlandville Elementary11 HLS 10RS-713	ORIGINAL

School, Scotlandville Junior High School, and Scotlandville High School, where he excelled1
as quarterback of the football team and was a proud Fighting Hornet; and2
WHEREAS, Mr. Honey, who had a passion for educating the youth of his3
community and state, received both a bachelor of science degree in education and a master4
of arts degree in guidance and counseling from Southern University, where he was employed5
for more than thirty highly productive years and where he served with great distinction as6
the director of the TRIO Programs, Educational Talent Search Classic, and Project Excel;7
and8
WHEREAS, on November 17, 1990, Mr. Honey married the former Linda J. Gray,9
and later they were blessed by the birth of their daughter, Theonne; and10
WHEREAS, Avon Honey was first elected to the Louisiana House of11
Representatives in a special election in 2002, and he was reelected without opposition in12
2007; and13
WHEREAS, Mr. Honey fully used every opportunity to serve the citizens of District14
No. 63 and Louisiana in an honorable and dedicated manner, serving very effectively in15
numerous capacities, including as chairman of the House Committee on Labor and Industrial16
Relations from 2008 until 2010, as vice chairman of the House Committee on Education17
from 2005 until 2007, and as a member of the House Committee on Environment from 200418
until 2005, the House Committee on Ways and Means from 2006 until 2010, and the Joint19
Legislative Committee on Capital Outlay from 2008 until 2010; and20
WHEREAS, in addition to his committee service in the legislature, Mr. Honey was21
an active member of the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus, the Democratic Caucus, and22
the Capital Region Legislative Delegation; and23
WHEREAS, Avon Honey's many achievements included fighting to raise teachers'24
salaries, working to meet the needs of the elderly, and the building of the Howell Place25
YMCA; and26
WHEREAS, Mr. Honey was also a member of Louisiana and Southwest Associations27
for Student Assistance Programs, National Council for Opportunities in Education,28
Louisiana and American Associations for Counseling and Development, Camphor Memorial29
United Methodist Church, Associate Lay Leaders, Scotlandville Hornets Alumni30 HLS 10RS-713	ORIGINAL

Association, Baton Rouge Kiwanis Early Risers, and the Zulu Pleasures and Social Club;1
and2
WHEREAS, Mr. Honey is survived by his wife, Linda J. Gray Honey; daughter,3
Theonne Honey; stepdaughter, Kimberly Bell; sisters, Melba Ann Honey and Jackie H.4
Murphy; brother, Edwin "Gil" Honey; stepsister, Gayle H. Davis; stepbrothers, Stanley G.5
Hayes, Vincent S. Honey, and Mark R. Honey; mother-in-law, Eva W. Gray; sister-in-law,6
Cynthia Gray James; brother-in-law, Elvin Gray; niece and godchild whom he helped to7
rear, Cherae Lynn James; other godchildren, Quinetta Riley, Chardae Henderson, Trinity8
Norman, and Randolph Holly III; special cousins, Ann Brown, Marva Joy Peat, Everette9
"Buddy" Mason, Adrian Mason, Sr. (Aeneid), and Karen K. Lewis; special great-nieces and10
nephews, Tyrick Jones, Dawnta' Tolbert, Robin McKenney, Adrienne Gray, Rajanee11
Anderson, and Kelandon Anderson; his assistant, Gwendolyn Philips; and countless other12
friends and relatives; he was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Matilda Flowers13
Honey, and his grandparents; and14
WHEREAS, Avon Honey was the kind of citizen who represents what is good about15
Louisiana, a man of wisdom who used his talents and integrity to change his community and16
state for the better; and 17
 WHEREAS, the death of Representative Honey has left a tremendous void in his18
community and has created a genuine sense of sorrow in the many citizens whose lives he19
touched, including the entire legislative family who mourns the loss of this unique gentleman20
who served this institution so well.21
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby22
express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of State Representative Avon R.23
Honey, does hereby extend posthumous honor and recognition to Mr. Honey for his24
outstanding accomplishments, particularly during his legacy as a member of the Louisiana25
House of Representatives which was marked by his uncompromising endeavor to improve26
the welfare of his constituents in East Baton Rouge Parish and the citizens of the state of27
Louisiana, does hereby record for posterity his manifold contributions, and does hereby pay28
tribute to him for the generous and effective way in which he dedicated his intelligence and29
his energy to the service of his family, friends, community, and state.30 HLS 10RS-713	ORIGINAL

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted1
to the family of Avon R. Honey.2
