Honey and their enduring gratitude for his outstanding contributions to East Baton Rouge Parish and the state of Louisiana, particularly during his tenure as a distinguished member of the Louisiana House of Representatives. WHEREAS, it was with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the legislature learned of the death of their colleague and dear friend, Avon R. Honey, on Friday, February 12, 2010, at the age of sixty-two; and WHEREAS, the son of the late Sam and Matilda Flowers Honey, Avon Ray Honey was born on May 1, 1947, in Baton Rouge, and attended North Scotlandville Elementary School, Scotlandville Junior High School, and Scotlandville High School, where he excelled as quarterback of the football team and was a proud Fighting Hornet; and WHEREAS, Mr. Honey, who had a passion for educating the youth of his community and state, received both a bachelor of science degree in education and a master of arts degree in guidance and counseling from Southern University, where he was employed ENROLLEDHCR NO. 15 Page 2 of 3 for more than thirty highly productive years and where he served with great distinction as the director of the TRIO Programs, Educational Talent Search Classic, and Project Excel; and WHEREAS, on November 17, 1990, Mr. Honey married the former Linda J. Gray, and later they were blessed by the birth of their daughter, Theonne; and WHEREAS, Avon Honey was first elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives in a special election in 2002, and he was reelected without opposition in 2007; and WHEREAS, Mr. Honey fully used every opportunity to serve the citizens of District No. 63 and Louisiana in an honorable and dedicated manner, serving very effectively in numerous capacities, including as chairman of the House Committee on Labor and Industrial Relations from 2008 until 2010, as vice chairman of the House Committee on Education from 2005 until 2007, and as a member of the House Committee on Environment from 2004 until 2005, the House Committee on Ways and Means from 2006 until 2010, and the Joint Legislative Committee on Capital Outlay from 2008 until 2010; and WHEREAS, in addition to his committee service in the legislature, Mr. Honey was an active member of the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus, the Democratic Caucus, and the Capital Region Legislative Delegation; and WHEREAS, Avon Honey's many achievements included fighting to raise teachers' salaries, working to meet the needs of the elderly, and the building of the Howell Place YMCA; and WHEREAS, Mr. Honey was also a member of Louisiana and Southwest Associations for Student Assistance Programs, National Council for Opportunities in Education, Louisiana and American Associations for Counseling and Development, Camphor Memorial United Methodist Church, Associate Lay Leaders, Scotlandville Hornets Alumni Association, Baton Rouge Kiwanis Early Risers, and the Zulu Pleasures and Social Club; and WHEREAS, Mr. Honey is survived by his wife, Linda J. Gray Honey; daughter, Theonne Honey; stepdaughter, Kimberly Bell; sisters, Melba Ann Honey and Jackie H. Murphy; brother, Edwin "Gil" Honey; stepsister, Gayle H. Davis; stepbrothers, Stanley G. Hayes, Vincent S. Honey, and Mark R. Honey; mother-in-law, Eva W. Gray; sister-in-law, ENROLLEDHCR NO. 15 Page 3 of 3 Cynthia Gray James; brother-in-law, Elvin Gray; niece and godchild whom he helped to rear, Cherae Lynn James; other godchildren, Quinetta Riley, Chardae Henderson, Trinity Norman, and Randolph Holly III; special cousins, Ann Brown, Marva Joy Peat, Everette "Buddy" Mason, Adrian Mason, Sr. (Aeneid), and Karen K. Lewis; special great-nieces and nephews, Tyrick Jones, Dawnta' Tolbert, Robin McKenney, Adrienne Gray, Rajanee Anderson, and Kelandon Anderson; his assistant, Gwendolyn Philips; and countless other friends and relatives; he was preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Matilda Flowers Honey, and his grandparents; and WHEREAS, Avon Honey was the kind of citizen who represents what is good about Louisiana, a man of wisdom who used his talents and integrity to change his community and state for the better; and WHEREAS, the death of Representative Honey has left a tremendous void in his community and has created a genuine sense of sorrow in the many citizens whose lives he touched, including the entire legislative family who mourns the loss of this unique gentleman who served this institution so well. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of State Representative Avon R. Honey, does hereby extend posthumous honor and recognition to Mr. Honey for his outstanding accomplishments, particularly during his legacy as a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives which was marked by his uncompromising endeavor to improve the welfare of his constituents in East Baton Rouge Parish and the citizens of the state of Louisiana, does hereby record for posterity his manifold contributions, and does hereby pay tribute to him for the generous and effective way in which he dedicated his intelligence and his energy to the service of his family, friends, community, and state.
