HLS 10RS-1073 ORIGINAL Page 1 of 3 Regular Session, 2010 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 17 BY REPRESENTATIVE HOFFMANN COMMENDATIONS: Commends Katherine Putnam, Miss Louisiana 2009 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To commend Katherine Putnam, Miss Louisiana 2009.2 WHEREAS, Miss Putnam was crowned Miss Louisiana in June of 2009, and has3 since represented her state with great pride and distinction; and4 WHEREAS, Katherine Putnam attended Oak Grove High School and is currently a5 senior at the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM), majoring in piano performance; and6 WHEREAS, Miss Putnam takes every opportunity to espouse her affiliation with7 ULM, and she wears the school's colors proudly, stating often that the university has made8 a powerful difference in shaping her spiritually and academically; and 9 WHEREAS, in addition to being a ULM Outstanding Scholar and a member of the10 Dean's List, Miss Putnam's scholastic honors include the Clara Freiburg Piano Scholarship,11 the Florence Allbritton Piano Award, the Louisiana TOPS Performance Award, and the12 Concert Choir and Chamber Singers Scholarship; and13 WHEREAS, Miss Putnam has served with unwavering dedication in various14 leadership roles, including as coordinator for a benefit concert honoring the life of Jabin15 Lawrence and the Children's Miracle Network; as coordinator of Miracles and Music: A16 Princess Tea Party and Fashion Show; as spokesperson for Louisiana Cares for Children, the17 Louisiana Governor’s Council for Fitness and Sports, and Right Decisions Right Now; and18 as a member of Concert Choir and Chamber Singers; and19 HLS 10RS-1073 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 17 Page 2 of 3 WHEREAS, Miss Putnam also served as the guest vocalist for the Purple Heart1 Highway Dedication and as an entertainer for ULM's "Stars of Tomorrow" and the seventy-2 fifth Presidential Gala for the Arts; and3 WHEREAS, among her many accomplishments, Miss Putnam was the winner of the4 National Association of Teachers of Singing women's classical voice division, the winner5 of the Miss Louisiana 2007 Preliminary Talent Contest, and a top ten finalist for the Miss6 Louisiana Pageants in 2007 and 2008; and7 WHEREAS, Miss Putnam is the first Indian-American to capture the Miss Louisiana8 crown, representing the enormous diversity of the state; and9 WHEREAS, Miss Putnam has traveled to India four times and resided in India for10 eight months; and11 WHEREAS, Miss Putnam's deep faith shines through in her role as music director,12 singer, and pianist for Contemporary Worship at First United Methodist Church in Monroe;13 and14 WHEREAS, Miss Putnam received this year's National Miracle Maker Award for15 her work raising funds for the Children's Miracle Network as determined by the Miss16 America Organization, an official fundraising partner of the nonprofit organization; and17 WHEREAS, Miss Putnam used her platform, "Miracle of Music", to focus on the18 power of music to transform lives; and19 WHEREAS, in January, Miss Putnam earned a spot in the top ten in the 2010 Miss20 America Pageant, as she was named third runner up at the Planet Hollywood Resort and21 Casino in Las Vegas before a live television audience of millions; and22 WHEREAS, Miss Putnam serves as an inspiration to Louisiana youth, encouraging23 young people to set goals and work hard to achieve them; and24 WHEREAS, Katherine Putnam merits a special measure of commendation for the25 tremendous pride and honor that she brings to her family, friends, church, and community,26 the University of Louisiana at Monroe, the city of Monroe, and the state of Louisiana.27 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby28 commend Katherine Putnam upon her outstanding accomplishments, does hereby recognize29 and record for posterity her singular contributions during her reign as Miss Louisiana 2009,30 HLS 10RS-1073 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 17 Page 3 of 3 and does hereby extend best wishes for continued success and happiness in all of her future1 endeavors.2 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted3 to Katherine Putnam, Miss Louisiana 2009.4 DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services.
