ENROLLED Page 1 of 3 Regular Session, 2010 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 17 BY REPRESENTATIVE HOFFMANN AND SENATOR WALSWORTH A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To commend Katherine Putnam, Miss Louisiana 2009. WHEREAS, Miss Putnam was crowned Miss Louisiana in June of 2009, and has since represented her state with great pride and distinction; and WHEREAS, Katherine Putnam attended Oak Grove High School and is currently a senior at the University of Louisiana at Monroe (ULM), majoring in piano performance; and WHEREAS, Miss Putnam takes every opportunity to espouse her affiliation with ULM, and she wears the school's colors proudly, stating often that the university has made a powerful difference in shaping her spiritually and academically; and WHEREAS, in addition to being a ULM Outstanding Scholar and a member of the Dean's List, Miss Putnam's scholastic honors include the Clara Freiburg Piano Scholarship, the Florence Allbritton Piano Award, the Louisiana TOPS Performance Award, and the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers Scholarship; and WHEREAS, Miss Putnam has served with unwavering dedication in various leadership roles, including as coordinator for a benefit concert honoring the life of Jabin Lawrence and the Children's Miracle Network; as coordinator of Miracles and Music: A Princess Tea Party and Fashion Show; as spokesperson for Louisiana Cares for Children, the Louisiana Governor's Council for Fitness and Sports, and Right Decisions Right Now; and as a member of Concert Choir and Chamber Singers; and WHEREAS, Miss Putnam also served as the guest vocalist for the Purple Heart Highway Dedication and as an entertainer for ULM's "Stars of Tomorrow" and the seventy- fifth Presidential Gala for the Arts; and ENROLLEDHCR NO. 17 Page 2 of 3 WHEREAS, among her many accomplishments, Miss Putnam was the winner of the National Association of Teachers of Singing women's classical voice division, the winner of the Miss Louisiana 2007 Preliminary Talent Contest, and a top ten finalist for the Miss Louisiana Pageants in 2007 and 2008; and WHEREAS, Miss Putnam is the first Indian-American to capture the Miss Louisiana crown, representing the enormous diversity of the state; and WHEREAS, Miss Putnam has traveled to India four times and resided in India for eight months; and WHEREAS, Miss Putnam's deep faith shines through in her role as music director, singer, and pianist for Contemporary Worship at First United Methodist Church in Monroe; and WHEREAS, Miss Putnam received this year's National Miracle Maker Award for her work raising funds for the Children's Miracle Network as determined by the Miss America Organization, an official fundraising partner of the nonprofit organization; and WHEREAS, Miss Putnam used her platform, "Miracle of Music", to focus on the power of music to transform lives; and WHEREAS, in January, Miss Putnam earned a spot in the top ten in the 2010 Miss America Pageant, as she was named third runner-up at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas before a live television audience of millions; and WHEREAS, Miss Putnam serves as an inspiration to Louisiana youth, encouraging young people to set goals and work hard to achieve them; and WHEREAS, Katherine Putnam merits a special measure of commendation for the tremendous pride and honor that she brings to her family, friends, church, and community, the University of Louisiana at Monroe, the city of Monroe, and the state of Louisiana. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Katherine Putnam upon her outstanding accomplishments, does hereby recognize and record for posterity her singular contributions during her reign as Miss Louisiana 2009, and does hereby extend best wishes for continued success and happiness in all of her future endeavors.
