ENROLLED Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2010 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 22 BY REPRESENTATIVE TIM BURNS A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Saúl Litvinoff, longtime professor at the Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center. WHEREAS, it was with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the Legislature of Louisiana learned of the death of Professor Saúl Litvinoff on Tuesday, January 5, 2010, at the age of eighty-four; and WHEREAS, on March 15, 1925, Saúl Litvinoff was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to Sara and Abram Litvinov; and WHEREAS, a brilliant student, Mr. Litvinoff graduated first in his class from the Colegio Nacional Argentino and the University of Buenos Aires Law School; and WHEREAS, following a term of successful private practice in Buenos Aires, Mr. Litvinoff moved to New Haven, Connecticut, to pursue a master's degree in law at Yale University; and WHEREAS, after teaching for two years at the University of Puerto Rico Law School in San Juan, Professor Litvinoff moved to Baton Rouge at the invitation of his dear friend and mentor, Dean Paul M. Hebert; he began his career at the LSU Law Center in 1965 and became acting director of the Center of Civil Studies in 1976; and WHEREAS, Professor Litvinoff fell in love with Louisiana, which became his adopted home; and WHEREAS, at LSU, he worked diligently on the Louisiana Civil Code, becoming the reporter for the Revision of Titles III and IV of Book III of the Civil Code and seeing it enacted as Louisiana's new Law of Obligations in 1984; he would also be named the reporter for revising titles of Louisiana's Law of Sales and Transaction and Compromise; and WHEREAS, Professor Litvinoff served as an advisor to the committees in charge of revising the titles of Louisiana's Law on Deposit and Sequestration, as well as Quasi- Contract and Enrichment Without Cause; in 1985, he was appointed reporter to revise the ENROLLEDHCR NO. 22 Page 2 of 2 Civil Code Title of Sales – a monumental task he completed ten years later – and in 1986, he published the first edition of his textbook, Sales and Lease in Louisiana Jurisprudence; and WHEREAS, Professor Litvinoff also served as dean of the Central American Banking School, which operated under the auspices of LSU for twenty years; served as a consultant to the United States State Department, the Louisiana Department of State, and the Central Bank of Honduras; and authored at least seventeen books; and WHEREAS, Professor Litvinoff retired from the LSU Law Center in 2009 following a series of "Year of Litvinoff" celebrations; among his many professional accomplishments, which included the Boyd Professorship for Law at LSU, he considered being voted favorite professor by the law students his greatest; and WHEREAS, Professor Litvinoff was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, David; and his wife, Ana DiChiara; he is survived by his sister-in-law, Amalia Litvinov; three nephews, Daniel and his wife Anahi and their daughters Natacha and Nadia, Ricardo and his wife Lucila and their daughter Eugenia, and Andres and his wife Nora and their children Tamara and Ariel; a sister-in-law, Guadalupe DiChiara; his only daughter, Ana Alejandra; his "adopted" sons, John Brockhoeft and his wife Cindy Samuel, Mark "David" Zimmerman, and George Herlitz and his wife Lil; and numerous other relatives, friends, and colleagues. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Professor Saúl Litvinoff, longtime professor at the Louisiana State University Paul M. Hebert Law Center, and does hereby recognize that he will forever hold a special place in the chronicles of the history of Louisiana as one of the state's most exceptional educators and most gifted legal scholars.
