BY REPRESENTATIVES PATRICIA SMITH, ROSALIND JONES, AND STIAES
SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Recognizes June 8, 2010, as AKA Day at the capitol
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To recognize Tuesday, June 8, 2010, as AKA Day at the capitol and to commend the2
members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.3
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha4
Sorority, Incorporated, for their outstanding community service and to recognize Tuesday,5
June 8, 2010, as AKA Day at the capitol; and 6
WHEREAS, founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908, Alpha7
Kappa Alpha Sorority has the distinction of being the first sorority established by African8
American college women; and 9
WHEREAS, throughout the past one hundred two years, Alpha Kappa Alpha10
Sorority has expanded internationally to more than eight hundred fifty chapters; and 11
WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana hosts thirty-one of these chapters, which are12
located on college and university campuses and have active alumnae groups in communities13
throughout the state; and 14
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority is committed to community service and15
actively contributes to the educational, civic, and social life of Louisiana's citizens; and 16
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha chapters encourage their members to become17
involved and committed community volunteers in one of their primary service components,18
including education, health, the economy, the arts, and the family; and19
WHEREAS, state representatives Rosalind Jones, Charmaine Marchand Stiaes, and20

WHEREAS, AKA Day at the capitol is a national program through which members1
of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority throughout the nation meet with their legislators to address2
issues that are pertinent to their communities. 3
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the4
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Tuesday, June 8, 2010, as AKA Day at the5
Louisiana State Capitol and does hereby commend and express enduring appreciation to the6
members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, for the tremendous honor and pride7
that they bring to their family, friends, and communities, the state of Louisiana, and the8
United States of America.9
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted10
to the international president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.11
