HLS 10RS-455 ORIGINAL Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2010 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 27 BY REPRESENTATIVES HOWARD AND RICHMOND COMMENDATIONS: Commends eight-year-old Amirikis Smith upon his offer of aid to the people of Haiti A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To commend eight-year-old Amirikis Smith upon his offer of aid to the people of Haiti.2 WHEREAS, Amirikis Smith wrote a letter to President Obama, soon after the3 devastating earthquake struck the nation of Haiti; and4 WHEREAS, he enclosed fifty dollars out of his savings account to give to Haiti5 relief; and6 WHEREAS, Amirikis Smith entrusted the letter to Mayor Cedric Glover of7 Shreveport, Louisiana; and8 WHEREAS, Mayor Glover delivered the letter to President Obama at the United9 States Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C.; and10 WHEREAS, on January 27, 2010, President Obama mentioned the great deed of the11 eight-year old boy in Louisiana at the end of his State of the Union Address; and12 WHEREAS, President Barack Obama said, "what keeps me going is the fundamental13 decency that has always been at the core of the American people"; and14 WHEREAS, he also said, "It lives on, in the eight-year old boy in Louisiana, who15 just sent me his allowance and asked if I would give it to the people in Haiti"; and16 WHEREAS, the President did not mention the young boy by name, however on17 Thursday, January 28, 2010, the White House informed the country that his name is18 Amirikis Smith; and19 WHEREAS, Amirikis Smith lives with his grandparents, Vera and Reverend Louis20 Smith, Jr.; and21 HLS 10RS-455 ORIGINAL HCR NO. 27 Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, Amirikis Smith is a third-grader at Red River Elementary School in1 Coushatta.2 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby3 commend eight-year-old Amirikis Smith upon his offer of aid to the people of Haiti.4 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted5 to Amirikis Smith and his family.6 DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services.
