ENROLLED Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2010 HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 27 BY REPRESENTATIVES HOWARD AND RICHMOND A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To commend eight-year-old Amirikis Smith upon his offer of aid to the people of Haiti. WHEREAS, Amirikis Smith wrote a letter to President Obama, soon after the devastating earthquake struck the nation of Haiti; and WHEREAS, he enclosed fifty dollars out of his savings account to give to Haiti relief; and WHEREAS, Amirikis Smith entrusted the letter to Mayor Cedric Glover of Shreveport, Louisiana; and WHEREAS, Mayor Glover delivered the letter to President Obama at the United States Conference of Mayors in Washington, D.C.; and WHEREAS, on January 27, 2010, President Obama mentioned the great deed of the eight-year old boy in Louisiana at the end of his State of the Union Address; and WHEREAS, President Barack Obama said, "what keeps me going is the fundamental decency that has always been at the core of the American people"; and WHEREAS, he also said, "It lives on, in the eight-year old boy in Louisiana, who just sent me his allowance and asked if I would give it to the people in Haiti"; and WHEREAS, the President did not mention the young boy by name, however on Thursday, January 28, 2010, the White House informed the country that his name is Amirikis Smith; and WHEREAS, Amirikis Smith lives with his grandparents, Vera and Reverend Louis Smith, Jr.; and WHEREAS, Amirikis Smith is a third-grader at Red River Elementary School in Coushatta. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend eight-year-old Amirikis Smith upon his offer of aid to the people of Haiti.
