HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 101
BY REPRESENTATIVE HUTTER
COMMENDATIONS:  Commends the Elaine P. Nunez Community College administration,
faculty, and staff
A RESOLUTION1
To commend the Elaine P. Nunez Community College administration, faculty, and staff for2
their commitment and dedication to rebuild after the destruction caused by Hurricane3
Katrina and to congratulate the Elaine P. Nunez Community College community4
upon its eighteen-year anniversary.5
WHEREAS, Elaine P. Nunez Community College is a unique institution of higher6
learning with an equally unique history; and7
WHEREAS, in 1992, the Louisiana Legislature passed Act No. 341, establishing the8
Elaine P. Nunez Community College by merging the Elaine P. Nunez Technical Institute and9
the St. Bernard Parish Community College; and10
WHEREAS, in spring of 1993, Elaine P. Nunez Community College was accredited11
by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools; and12
WHEREAS, on August 29, 2005, Nunez Community College and its entire service13
area was struck by Hurricane Katrina; and14
WHEREAS, Hurricane Katrina was the greatest natural disaster to affect the United15
States in recorded history; and16
WHEREAS, St. Bernard Parish, the home parish of the Nunez campus, was almost17
completely decimated, as it took a direct hit and suffered flood waters that in many areas did18
not recede for weeks; and19
WHEREAS, the first floor of every building on the Chalmette campus was flooded20

WHEREAS, despite dire predictions, and under the leadership of Chancellor Thomas1
Warner, the Nunez Community College presented a fall mini-semester within weeks of the2
disaster; and3
WHEREAS, by the end of December 2005, the Facilities Department, along with4
volunteer crews and others, gutted the first floors of the buildings; and5
WHEREAS, they also had electricity, water, and sewer hook-ups in the Arts,6
Sciences, and Technology Building; and 7
WHEREAS, the Nunez Community College was fully reopened for business on8
January 25, 2006. 9
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the10
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Elaine P. Nunez Community College11
administration, Chancellor Thomas Warner, faculty, and staff for  their commitment and12
dedication to rebuild after the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina and to congratulate13
the Elaine P. Nunez Community College community upon its eighteen-year anniversary.14
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted15
to Elaine P. Nunez Community College Chancellor Thomas Warner.16
