HLS 10RS-3960 ORIGINAL Page 1 of 3 Regular Session, 2010 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 116 BY REPRESENTATIVE ABRAMSON COMMENDATIONS: Commends the LSU Health Sciences Center School of Allied Health Professions for 40 years of exemplary health care education A RESOLUTION1 To commend the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Allied Health2 Professions for forty years of exemplary health care education in the professions of3 audiology, cardiovascular technology, clinical laboratory sciences, occupational4 therapy, physical therapy, rehabilitation counseling, respiratory therapy, and speech-5 language pathology.6 WHEREAS, on April 2, 1970, the Louisiana State University Board of Supervisors7 approved a request by the Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans to8 establish a School of Allied Health Professions; and9 WHEREAS, at its founding, the School of Allied Health Professionals was the fifth10 school within the Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans; and11 WHEREAS, the School of Allied Health Professions became operational on July 1,12 1970, and its first class of students was in 1971; and13 WHEREAS, the School of Allied Health Professions has graduated more than six14 thousand health care providers, and these graduates have achieved a ninety-s even percent15 passing rate on professional licensure examinations; and16 WHEREAS, the School of Allied Health Professions provides education in eight17 health care fields: audiology, cardiovascular technology, clinical laboratory sciences,18 occupational therapy, physical therapy, rehabilitation counseling, respiratory therapy, and19 speech-language pathology; and20 HLS 10RS-3960 ORIGINAL HR NO. 116 Page 2 of 3 WHEREAS, the School of Allied Health Professions also includes the Human1 Development Center, a member of a national network of sixty-seven University Centers for2 Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service; and3 WHEREAS, the mission of the School of Allied Health Professions in New Orleans4 is to provide educational programs for students enrolled in the allied health disciplines, to5 contribute to the body of knowledge in the allied health sciences through research and6 scholarship, and to provide patient care and community outreach of the highest quality for7 the citizens of Louisiana; and8 WHEREAS, in the spring of 2010, the School of Allied Health Professions had their9 highest student enrollment, with four hundred four students, in the past forty years; and10 WHEREAS, student enrollment at the School of Allied Health Professions has11 increased by fifty-one percent since the spring of 2005 and sixty-three percent since the12 spring of 2006; and13 WHEREAS, student applicants to the School of Allied Health Professions have14 increased by twenty-four percent since 2005 and one hundred twenty-three percent since15 2006; and16 WHEREAS, the faculty of the School of Allied Health Professions continues to17 expand the body of research in the areas of clinical laboratory sciences, speech-language18 pathology, audiology, respiratory therapy, and rehabilitation counseling; and19 WHEREAS, the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Allied20 Health Professions merits a special measure of commendation for the tremendous honor and21 pride that this fine institution brings to its faculty, staff, and students, the city of New22 Orleans, the Louisiana State University System, and the state of Louisiana.23 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the24 Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the Louisiana State University Health25 Sciences Center School of Allied Health Professions for forty years of exemplary health care26 education and does hereby extend best wishes for the school's continued success in the27 future.28 HLS 10RS-3960 ORIGINAL HR NO. 116 Page 3 of 3 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted1 to the dean of the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Allied Health2 Professions. 3 DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services.
