HLS 10RS-4979 ORIGINAL Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2010 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 125 BY REPRESENTATIVE ARNOLD BUILDING CODES: Urges and requests the adoption of a rehabilitation subcode within the state uniform construction code A RESOLUTION1 To urge and request the adoption of a rehabilitation subcode within the state uniform2 construction code.3 WHEREAS, in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the Legislature of4 Louisiana found it necessary to adopt the mandatory construction standards; and5 WHEREAS, the Legislature of Louisiana promulgated a state uniform construction6 code to govern the construction, reconstruction, alteration, and repair of buildings and other7 structures; and8 WHEREAS, the public policy of Louisiana is to maintain reasonable standards of9 construction in buildings and other structures in the state consistent with the public health,10 safety, and welfare of its citizens; and11 WHEREAS, certain portions of the state uniform construction code are vague as to12 older historic properties; and13 WHEREAS, the city of New Orleans is revered throughout the country for its historic14 buildings and landmarks; and15 WHEREAS, many states, including New Jersey, have adopted subcodes to16 incorporate the preservation and maintenance of historic buildings and landmarks into their17 state construction code; and18 WHEREAS, since the adoption of a rehabilitation subcode in New Jersey, investment19 in the rehabilitation of older properties has increased by twenty percent; and20 HLS 10RS-4979 ORIGINAL HR NO. 125 Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, it is incumbent upon the state of Louisiana to ensure that historic1 buildings and landmarks are maintained and preserved through an effective rehabilitation2 subcode within the state uniform construction code.3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the4 Legislature of Louisiana does hereby urge and request the adoption of a rehabilitation5 subcode within the state uniform construction code.6 DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services.
