SPECIAL DAY/WEEK/MONTH:  Recognizes Thursday, June 3, 2010, as Girl Scouts of
the USA Day at the state capitol
A RESOLUTION1
To recognize Thursday, June 3, 2010, as Girl Scouts of the USA Day at the Louisiana State2
Capitol.3
WHEREAS, Girls Scouts of the USA is the world's largest organization dedicated4
solely to helping girls everywhere build character and gain skills for success in the real5
world; and 6
WHEREAS, in 2009 and 2010, the Louisiana Girl Scouts Councils served almost7
thirty-six thousand girls in six program levels; and 8
WHEREAS, 2010 marks the celebration of the Girl Scouts' ninety-eighth9
anniversary; and 10
WHEREAS, founded in 1912 in Savannah, Georgia, by Juliette Gordon Low, Girl11
Scouts' membership has grown to nearly four million members throughout the United States12
and around the world; and13
WHEREAS, the two Girl Scouts Councils of Louisiana, the Girl Scouts of Louisiana-14
Pines to the Gulf and Girl Scouts Louisiana East, exemplify all the best that the organization15
has to offer; and 16
WHEREAS, through the Girl Scouts of the USA, girls can see the world and their17
place in it by learning the importance of personal responsibility, the value of goal-setting,18

WHEREAS, throughout its distinguished history, Girl Scouts has welcomed girls and1
women from every background to join and has inspired them with courage, confidence, and2
character to make the world a better place; and3
WHEREAS, the Girl Scouts program is based on fundamental goals that encourage4
girls to develop to their full potential, to relate to others with increasing understanding, skill,5
and respect, to develop a meaningful set of values to guide their actions and provide for6
sound decisionmaking, and to contribute to the improvement of society; and7
WHEREAS, through the guidance of trained adults, girls between the ages of five8
and seventeen are offered a variety of opportunities to explore numerous topics, including9
leadership, math, science, technology, health, fitness, sports, environmental education, the10
arts, and global awareness; and11
WHEREAS, the Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest national award in Girl Scouts,12
and with national standards, the award represents girls' time, leadership, creativity, and effort13
contributed to making their community better; and14
WHEREAS, the young women who have earned the 2010 Girl Scout Gold Award15
and have become community leaders are Lindsey Vallot of Lafayette, Ashley Boykin and16
Lauren Brown of Shreveport, Bonnie Moody of Leesville, Wendy Kussmann of Lake17
Charles, Charlene O’Neill of Ragley, Leigh Griffin of Destrehan, Gillian Maris Jones of18
New Orleans, Sarah Mathews of Mandeville, and Mandy McNamara of Destrehan; and19
WHEREAS, during the past ninety-eight years, more than fifty-five million20
American women have participated in Girl Scouts, and this enduring tradition continues to21
strengthen individual communities and society as a whole.22
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the23
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Thursday, June 3, 2010, as Girl Scouts of24
the USA Day at the Louisiana State Capitol, does hereby commend this organization for its25
many contributions and continued dedication to girls in the United States and around the26
world, and does hereby welcome members of Girl Scouts of the USA as they visit the capitol27
on this special and memorable occasion.28
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this Resolution be transmitted to Girl29
Scouts of the USA and to the Girl Scouts Councils in Louisiana.30 HLS 10RS-5050	ORIGINAL
