ENROLLED Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2010 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 128 BY REPRESENTATIVE BARROW A RESOLUTION To recognize Thursday, June 3, 2010, as Girl Scouts of the USA Day at the Louisiana State Capitol. WHEREAS, Girls Scouts of the USA is the world's largest organization dedicated solely to helping girls everywhere build character and gain skills for success in the real world; and WHEREAS, in 2009 and 2010, the Louisiana Girl Scouts Councils served almost thirty-six thousand girls in six program levels; and WHEREAS, 2010 marks the celebration of the Girl Scouts' ninety-eighth anniversary; and WHEREAS, founded in 1912 in Savannah, Georgia, by Juliette Gordon Low, Girl Scouts' membership has grown to nearly four million members throughout the United States and around the world; and WHEREAS, the two Girl Scouts Councils of Louisiana, the Girl Scouts of Louisiana- Pines to the Gulf and Girl Scouts Louisiana East, exemplify all the best that the organization has to offer; and WHEREAS, through the Girl Scouts of the USA, girls can see the world and their place in it by learning the importance of personal responsibility, the value of goal-setting, the spirit of teamwork, and the thrill of accomplishment; and WHEREAS, throughout its distinguished history, Girl Scouts has welcomed girls and women from every background to join and has inspired them with courage, confidence, and character to make the world a better place; and WHEREAS, the Girl Scouts program is based on fundamental goals that encourage girls to develop to their full potential, to relate to others with increasing understanding, skill, and respect, to develop a meaningful set of values to guide their actions and provide for sound decisionmaking, and to contribute to the improvement of society; and ENROLLEDHR NO. 128 Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, through the guidance of trained adults, girls between the ages of five and seventeen are offered a variety of opportunities to explore numerous topics, including leadership, math, science, technology, health, fitness, sports, environmental education, the arts, and global awareness; and WHEREAS, the Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest national award in Girl Scouts, and with national standards, the award represents girls' time, leadership, creativity, and effort contributed to making their community better; and WHEREAS, the young women who have earned the 2010 Girl Scout Gold Award and have become community leaders are Lindsey Vallot of Lafayette, Ashley Boykin and Lauren Brown of Shreveport, Bonnie Moody of Leesville, Wendy Kussmann of Lake Charles, Charlene O’Neill of Ragley, Leigh Griffin of Destrehan, Gillian Maris Jones of New Orleans, Sarah Mathews of Mandeville, and Mandy McNamara of Destrehan; and WHEREAS, during the past ninety-eight years, more than fifty-five million American women have participated in Girl Scouts, and this enduring tradition continues to strengthen individual communities and society as a whole. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Thursday, June 3, 2010, as Girl Scouts of the USA Day at the Louisiana State Capitol, does hereby commend this organization for its many contributions and continued dedication to girls in the United States and around the world, and does hereby welcome members of Girl Scouts of the USA as they visit the capitol on this special and memorable occasion.
