CONDOLENCES: Expresses condolences upon the death of Bishop Gerald Archie "G.A."
Mangun of Alexandria
A RESOLUTION1
To express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Bishop Gerald Archie "G.A"2
Mangun of Alexandria.3
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the4
Louisiana House of Representatives have learned of the death of Bishop Gerald Archie5
"G.A" Mangun of Alexandria on Thursday, June 17, 2010, at the age of ninety-one; and6
WHEREAS, Bishop Mangun was the longtime pastor of The Pentecostals of7
Alexandria and a beloved spiritual leader in the community for sixty years; and8
WHEREAS, Bishop Mangun helped build the church's congregation from fewer than9
forty members when he arrived in Alexandria in 1950 to approximately four thousand10
members at the time of his death; and11
WHEREAS, born March 11, 1919, in LaPaz, Indiana, Bishop Mangun was ordained12
a minister in 1942 and was elected pastor of the then-First United Pentecostal Church in13
1950 by thirty-five members, and the church, now The Pentecostals, seats thousands today14
and is full for Sunday services; and15
WHEREAS, for fifty-six years, Bishop Mangun served as the Presbyter over the16
United Pentecostal Churches in the Louisiana District's Section 7, composed of17
approximately thirty-five churches in central Louisiana, and his service on the Louisiana18
District United Pentecostal Church (UPC) board made him the longest tenured district board19

WHEREAS, Bishop Mangun was the kind of citizen who represents what is good1
about Louisiana, a man of wisdom and faith who used his gifts and talents to change his2
community for the better; and 3
WHEREAS, Bishop Mangun's fellow citizens mourn the loss of this beloved4
individual and share the grief of his family, friends, and congregation at his passing; and5
WHEREAS, Bishop Mangun was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Mangun6
and Bertha Birk Mangun, and four of his six siblings, Woodrow Riddle, Mildred Mangun7
Shock, Gladys Mangun Starkweather, and Grace Mangun Coleman; he is survived by his8
wife, Vesta Layne Gibson Mangun; his son, G. Anthony Mangun, and his wife, Mickey; his9
grandchildren, Miquell Mangun Hennigan and her husband, Jeffrey, and Gentry Mangun;10
two great grandchildren, Eva Mykayle Hennigan and Gibson David Hennigan; and two11
sisters, Dr. Ruth Holland and Martha Spencer; and12
WHEREAS, Bishop Mangun will long continue to bring great pride and honor to the13
Alexandria community and to the state of Louisiana.14
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the15
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the16
death of Bishop Gerald Archie "G.A" Mangun of Alexandria, does hereby extend enduring17
appreciation for his outstanding accomplishments and singular contributions during a18
lifetime of dedication and service to God and his family, friends, church, and community,19
and does hereby recognize that his legacy of kindness and compassion shall live forever in20
the minds and hearts of all who knew and loved him.21
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted22
to the family of Bishop Gerald Archie "G.A" Mangun of Alexandria.23
