HLS 10RS-6376 ORIGINAL Page 1 of 3 Regular Session, 2010 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 201 BY REPRESENTATIVE WADDELL COMMENDATIONS: Commends Victoria Catherine Ward of Captain Shreve High School upon her selection as a representative of La. at the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress A RESOLUTION1 To commend Victoria Catherine Ward of Captain Shreve High School upon her selection2 as a representative of Louisiana at the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress in3 Los Angeles, California.4 WHEREAS, Victoria Catherine Ward attended the Louisiana Hugh O'Brian Youth5 Leadership Seminar, held from June 4 through June 6, 2010, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and6 WHEREAS, the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership program (HOBY) was established7 in 1958 by popular actor Hugh O'Brian following a visit to Africa where he was inspired8 after meeting with Dr. Albert Schweitzer to create an organization designed to encourage9 young people to take a leadership role in society and become catalysts for change; and10 WHEREAS, Victoria Catherine Ward was joined in the leadership seminar by one11 hundred twenty-one other young leaders representing their high schools throughout12 Louisiana, where they discussed the core values of the HOBY organization, including the13 impact of volunteering in one's community, partnership in community, and an appreciation14 and need for diversity in today's culture; and15 WHEREAS, the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress is held every year in16 conjunction with a major United States university, and the World Leadership Congress17 brings together young men and women from around the world for a week-long intensive18 educational leadership conference; and19 HLS 10RS-6376 ORIGINAL HR NO. 201 Page 2 of 3 WHEREAS, Victoria Catherine Ward was chosen as an alternate to represent1 Louisiana in the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress being held July 23 through July2 30, 2010, at the University of California in Los Angeles; and3 WHEREAS, in September of each year, HOBY sends nomination materials to every4 accredited public and private high school in the United States, and each high school is5 invited to select one sophomore with demonstrated leadership abilities and potential to6 attend regional spring HOBY seminars; and7 WHEREAS, at the World Leadership Congress, students learn firsthand about other8 cultures and opinions, form friendships, and exchange ideas in an environment where they9 can feel comfortable in open discussions with their peers, learning to voice how they have10 shaped and formed their own views about the role of leadership in society; and11 WHEREAS, Hugh O'Brian believes the most important thing in education is to teach12 young people to think for themselves, and the more than three hundred thousand HOBY13 alumni demonstrated how this belief has influenced and inspired young people to become14 more involved in their communities; and15 WHEREAS, the Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress seeks to inspire high16 school students to excel as leaders, using friendship with others as a catalyst for their17 learning experience.18 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the19 Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend and congratulate Victoria Catherine Ward20 of Captain Shreve High School upon her selection as a representative of Louisiana at the21 Hugh O'Brian World Leadership Congress in Los Angeles, California, and does hereby22 recognize the pride and honor that this wonderful young woman has brought to her family,23 friends, school, community, and state.24 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted25 to Victoria Catherine Ward.26 HLS 10RS-6376 ORIGINAL HR NO. 201 Page 3 of 3 DIGEST The digest printed below was prepared by House Legislative Services.
