HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 61

CONDOLENCES:  Expresses condolences upon the death of James Washington, Sr.
A RESOLUTION1
To express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of James Washington, Sr.2
WHEREAS, it is with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the3
Louisiana House of Representatives have learned of the death of James Washington, Sr., on4
April 27, 2010, at the age of sixty-six; and5
WHEREAS, Mr. Washington was born on July 6, 1943, in Benton, Louisiana, and6
attended C.H. Iron High School; and7
WHEREAS, at the age of eighteen, Mr. Washington moved to New York, where he8
met the love of his life, Shirley Hill, and they were married on August 29, 1965; and9
WHEREAS, to this union, two children were born, Sherrill and James Washington,10
Jr.; and11
WHEREAS, Mr. Washington was a member of the First Freedom Baptist Church,12
where he served faithfully on the usher board and worked at Waldboums Supermarket for13
twenty-five years;  and 14
WHEREAS, in July of 1995, Mr. Washington and his family relocated to Shreveport,15
and he became a member of the Longview Baptist Church in Benton, serving faithfully on16
the deacon board until his death; and17
WHEREAS, Mr. Washington was also a member of the Mystic Lodge #62, a 32nd18
degree mason, a royal arch mason, a member of the Royal Order of Eastern Star, president19
of the Hillside Village Association for more than eight years, and the chief volunteer for20

WHEREAS, Mr. Washington was preceded in death by his stepfather, J.V. Black,1
and two brothers, Raymond and Ray; and2
WHEREAS, a great husband, a loving father, and considered by his grandchildren3
to be the best poppy in the world, Mr. Washington is survived by his wife of forty-six years,4
Shirley; his mother, Gennie; his children, Sherrill and James; three grandchildren, Trimell,5
Chloe, and Colbi; his great-grandson, Trimell Isaac; two sisters, Linda and Debbie; three6
brothers, Obis, Rex, and Kenneth; two uncles, Coleman and Joel; five goddaughters, Lisa,7
Monique, Michelle, Macie, and Tanasi; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and8
loved ones; and9
WHEREAS, with the death of Mr. Washington, the state of Louisiana has lost one10
of her finest citizens; and11
WHEREAS, though the death of Mr. Washington has left a tremendous void in his12
community, his memory shall live forever in the minds and hearts of all who loved him.13
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the14
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby express sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the15
death of James Washington, Sr., does hereby record for posterity his outstanding16
accomplishments and singular contributions, and does hereby recognize that the memory of17
this wonderful man will continue to be a source of great pride and honor for his family,18
friends, church, community, and state.19
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted20
to the family of James Washington, Sr.21
