HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 69

NURSES:  Recognizes the week of May 6 - 12, 2010, as La. State Nurses Week
A RESOLUTION1
To recognize the week of May 6 through 12, 2010, as Louisiana State Nurses Week.2
WHEREAS, cost-effective, safe, and quality health care services are an increasingly3
important component of the United States health care delivery system now and will continue4
to be so in the future; and5
WHEREAS, professional nursing has been demonstrated as an indispensable6
component of patient safety and quality patient care; and7
WHEREAS, the future demand for registered nursing services in the United States8
is expected to rise at an increasing rate because of the aging of the American population; and9
WHEREAS, a renewed emphasis on primary and preventive health care will require10
better utilization of all of the nursing resources of this nation; and11
WHEREAS, the depth and breadth of the registered nursing profession meets the12
different and emerging health care needs of the American population in a wide range of13
settings; and14
WHEREAS, Louisiana's fifty-six thousand registered nurses and the nearly three15
million one hundred thousand registered nurses in the United States comprise the largest16
health care profession in this state and in the nation; and17
WHEREAS, the Louisiana State Nurses Association, as the voice for the registered18
nurses of this state, is working to chart a new course for a healthy state which relies on19

WHEREAS, the year 2010 has been declared the International Year of the Nurse in1
celebration of the centennial year of the death of Florence Nightengale (1820-1910), the2
founder of modern nursing; and3
WHEREAS, the week of May 6 through 12, 2010, has been declared Louisiana State4
Nurses Week; and5
WHEREAS, the theme of Louisiana State Nurses Week is "Nurses: Caring Today6
for a Healthier Tomorrow".7
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the8
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby celebrate the ways in which registered nurses strive to9
provide safe and high-quality patient care and chart the course for improving our health care10
system.11
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature12
of Louisiana does hereby proclaim May 6 through 12, 2010, to be Louisiana State Nurses13
Week.14
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted15
to the executive director of the Louisiana State Nurses Association.16
