COMMENDATIONS:  Commends the efforts of Links, Incorporated and recognizes May
12, 2010, as La. Links Day at the capitol
A RESOLUTION1
To commend the efforts of Links, Incorporated and to recognize Wednesday, May 12, 2010,2
as Louisiana Links Day at the Louisiana State Capitol.3
WHEREAS, Links is an international organization of women of color dedicated to4
improving the quality of life for humankind; and5
WHEREAS, the worldwide organization has more than ten thousand members in two6
hundred seventy-two chapters in forty-two states and three countries; and7
WHEREAS, there are eight Links chapters in the state of Louisiana, namely the8
Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Crescent City, LaCapitale, Monroe-Grambling, New Orleans,9
Pontchartrain, and Shreveport chapters; and10
WHEREAS, Links was founded in 1946 by Margaret Hawkins and Sarah Scott in11
hopes of promoting civic, educational, and cultural concerns through the creation of their12
service organization; and13
WHEREAS, the mission of Links has been to discern a need and fulfill it, which they14
have done by donating money and time to charitable efforts, including one million dollars15
to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and two million dollars16
to the United Negro College Fund; and17
WHEREAS, the members of Links chapters in Louisiana began coming to the18
legislature in 2006 to let their legislators know that they supported legislation and the19
development of policies that provided the funding and infrastructure necessary for the20

WHEREAS, the members of Links chapters in Louisiana came to the legislature in1
2007 to let their legislators know that they supported legislation and the development of2
policies that closed the gap in poverty and education, that provided adequate and affordable3
health care to all citizens, that brought Louisiana people home, that revitalized New Orleans4
public schools, and that guaranteed displaced Louisiana voters their constitutional right to5
vote; and6
WHEREAS, members of Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2008 to let their7
legislators know that they supported legislation and the development of policies aimed at8
reducing the obesity rate for children in Louisiana and other health care and education9
initiatives aimed at creating a better quality of life in Louisiana; and10
WHEREAS, members of Louisiana Links came to the legislature in 2009 to advocate11
for health care and education issues which will continue to improve the lives of all Louisiana12
citizens, and members continue to advocate for these important issues in 2010; and13
WHEREAS, Links, Incorporated merits a special measure of commendation as they14
visit the Louisiana State Capitol on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, for Louisiana Links Day.15
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the16
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend the efforts of Links, Incorporated and does17
hereby recognize Wednesday, May 12, 2010, as Louisiana Links Day at the Louisiana State18
Capitol.19
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted20
to Links, Incorporated.21
