HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 73
BY REPRESENTATIVE HINES
COMMENDATIONS:  Commends Derek D. Bardell for his outstanding accomplishments
A RESOLUTION1
To commend Derek D. Bardell of New Orleans for his outstanding accomplishments.2
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Derek D. Bardell, one of Louisiana's finest3
citizens; and4
WHEREAS, an educational administrator, Mr. Bardell is a graduate of St. Augustine5
High School and holds a bachelor of arts degree in business management/urban studies and6
public policy from Dillard University, a master of liberal arts degree in interdisciplinary7
liberal arts, and a master of arts degree in civic and cultural management, both from Tulane8
University; he is also certified by the state Department of Education in numerous9
specialization areas; and10
WHEREAS, Mr. Bardell serves as a dean of student services with the Jefferson11
Parish Public School System and as an adjunct professor of business administration at12
Delgado Community College; and13
WHEREAS, previously, Mr. Bardell served for ten years as a tenured instructor of14
business with New Orleans Public Schools, where he instituted, headed, or participated in15
a number of academic and extracurricular programs that significantly enriched the lives of16
his students; and17
        WHEREAS, an active community servant, Mr. Bardell has served on the board18
of advisors of the Infinity Network Project, a treatment program that services substance19
abusing pregnant and postpartum women and their dependent children; serves on the20

and the United States Selective Service Board; participated in the Metropolitan Area1
Committee's (MAC) Leadership Forum; and has held positions as a teacher consultant for2
the Dillard University Division of Education, a program selector for the New Orleans Public3
Schools/New Teacher Project Human Resources Department, and as a Praxis consultant for4
Delgado Community College; and 5
WHEREAS, in 1999, Mr. Bardell was selected by United States Senator John Breaux6
to serve as a United States Senate Teacher Intern because of his exemplary performance in7
the classroom; he has been cited by Tribune Magazine as both one of its People on the Move8
and a Rising Star; Gambit Magazine recognized him in its 2007 40 Under 40 exclusive; he9
has been honored thrice by the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE)10
for his methodologies for teaching crucial business concepts, and NFTE named him its 200411
Certified Entrepreneurship Teacher of the Year and its 2006 Relentless Dedication to Youth12
Award Recipient; and he has been recognized by the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse13
(CADA) on numerous occasions because of his academic prowess and commitment to14
abating drug and alcohol abuse among inner-city children; and15
         WHEREAS, Mr. Bardell has appeared on the St. Augustine Purple Knights Television16
Show to comment on the many issues confronting his community and its youth; was featured17
in the 2002 edition of the African American Success Guide of the New Orleans City18
Business Magazine; was designated a "Trailblazer" by Data News Weekly Magazine; was19
named the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary 2003-2004 Teacher Award Winner;20
was named the Pan-American Life We Will Teacher of the Month; has twice been selected21
to be a special guest lecturer at Xavier University to speak on socioeconomic and22
educational issues; and has been commended by various governmental entities for his23
achievements; and     24
WHEREAS, throughout his illustrious career, Mr. Bardell has garnered numerous25
other awards and distinctions, such as the Artie Award from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority,26
Incorporated; being listed in Who's Who Among America's Teachers; being designated a27
Southern Exposure Research Fellow with Southern University at Baton Rouge; and28
induction into Phi Delta Kappa International Education Society, Omicron Delta Kappa29

Society, Golden Key National Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor1
Society, Omicron Delta Epsilon International Economics Honor Society, and Alpha Kappa2
Mu Honor Society; and3
WHEREAS, Mr. Bardell's unique experiences have positioned him to be a strong4
agent of change, hope, and progress in New Orleans; and5
WHEREAS, Mr. Bardell merits a special measure of commendation for the pride and6
honor he brings to the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana.7
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the8
Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Derek D. Bardell of New Orleans for his9
outstanding accomplishments and does hereby extend to him best wishes for continued10
success and happiness in all of his future endeavors.11
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted12
to Derek D. Bardell.13
