ENROLLED Page 1 of 3 Regular Session, 2010 HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 73 BY REPRESENTATIVE HINES A RESOLUTION To commend Derek D. Bardell of New Orleans for his outstanding accomplishments. WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Derek D. Bardell, one of Louisiana's finest citizens; and WHEREAS, an educational administrator, Mr. Bardell is a graduate of St. Augustine High School and holds a bachelor of arts degree in business management/urban studies and public policy from Dillard University, a master of liberal arts degree in interdisciplinary liberal arts, and a master of arts degree in civic and cultural management, both from Tulane University; he is also certified by the state Department of Education in numerous specialization areas; and WHEREAS, Mr. Bardell serves as a dean of student services with the Jefferson Parish Public School System and as an adjunct professor of business administration at Delgado Community College; and WHEREAS, previously, Mr. Bardell served for ten years as a tenured instructor of business with New Orleans Public Schools, where he instituted, headed, or participated in a number of academic and extracurricular programs that significantly enriched the lives of his students; and WHEREAS, an active community servant, Mr. Bardell has served on the board of advisors of the Infinity Network Project, a treatment program that services substance abusing pregnant and postpartum women and their dependent children; serves on the Delgado Community College Care and Development of Young Children board of advisors and the United States Selective Service Board; participated in the Metropolitan Area Committee's (MAC) Leadership Forum; and has held positions as a teacher consultant for the Dillard University Division of Education, a program selector for the New Orleans Public ENROLLEDHR NO. 73 Page 2 of 3 Schools/New Teacher Project Human Resources Department, and as a Praxis consultant for Delgado Community College; and WHEREAS, in 1999, Mr. Bardell was selected by United States Senator John Breaux to serve as a United States Senate Teacher Intern because of his exemplary performance in the classroom; he has been cited by Tribune Magazine as both one of its People on the Move and a Rising Star; Gambit Magazine recognized him in its 2007 40 Under 40 exclusive; he has been honored thrice by the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) for his methodologies for teaching crucial business concepts, and NFTE named him its 2004 Certified Entrepreneurship Teacher of the Year and its 2006 Relentless Dedication to Youth Award Recipient; and he has been recognized by the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (CADA) on numerous occasions because of his academic prowess and commitment to abating drug and alcohol abuse among inner-city children; and WHEREAS, Mr. Bardell has appeared on the St. Augustine Purple Knights Television Show to comment on the many issues confronting his community and its youth; was featured in the 2002 edition of the African American Success Guide of the New Orleans City Business Magazine; was designated a "Trailblazer" by Data News Weekly Magazine; was named the Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary 2003-2004 Teacher Award Winner; was named the Pan-American Life We Will Teacher of the Month; has twice been selected to be a special guest lecturer at Xavier University to speak on socioeconomic and educational issues; and has been commended by various governmental entities for his achievements; and WHEREAS, throughout his illustrious career, Mr. Bardell has garnered numerous other awards and distinctions, such as the Artie Award from Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; being listed in Who's Who Among America's Teachers; being designated a Southern Exposure Research Fellow with Southern University at Baton Rouge; and induction into Phi Delta Kappa International Education Society, Omicron Delta Kappa National Leadership Honor Society, Pi Sigma Alpha National Political Science Honor Society, Golden Key National Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta International English Honor Society, Omicron Delta Epsilon International Economics Honor Society, and Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society; and ENROLLEDHR NO. 73 Page 3 of 3 WHEREAS, Mr. Bardell's unique experiences have positioned him to be a strong agent of change, hope, and progress in New Orleans; and WHEREAS, Mr. Bardell merits a special measure of commendation for the pride and honor he brings to the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Representatives of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend Derek D. Bardell of New Orleans for his outstanding accomplishments and does hereby extend to him best wishes for continued success and happiness in all of his future endeavors.
