PROBATION/PAROLE. Provides for changes in the qualifications needed to serve on the
parole board. (1/9/12)
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 15:574.2(A)(1), relative to the Board of Parole; to provide for2
minimum qualifications of members; and to provide for related matters.3
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:4
Section 1. R.S. 15:574.2(A)(1) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:5
ยง574.2. Board of Parole; membership; qualifications; vacancies; compensation;6
domicile; venue; meetings; quorum; panels; powers and duties;7
transfer of property to board; representation of applicants before the8
board; prohibitions9
A.(1) A board of parole, hereinafter referred to as "the board," is hereby10
created in the Department of Public Safety and Corrections. It shall consist of seven11
members appointed by the governor, one of whom shall be the chairman of the12
board, and all of whom shall serve at the pleasure of the governor.  All members13
shall possess not less than five years actual experience in the field of penology,14
corrections, law enforcement, sociology, law, education, social work, medicine,15
or a combination thereof, or have served at least five years previously on the16
board. One of the seven members shall be appointed from a list of at least three17 SB NO. 52

names submitted by Victims and Citizens Against Crime, Inc. Each appointment by1
the governor shall be submitted to the Senate for confirmation.2

Section 2.  The provisions of this Act shall become effective January 9, 2012.4

Present law creates a 7-member board of parole board appointed by the governor.
Proposed law requires that members of the parole board possess not less than five years
experience in the field of penology, corrections, law enforcement, sociology, law, education,
social work, medicine, or a combination thereof.
Proposed law further provides that persons with five years service on the parole board would
be qualified to serve on the board without regard to experience in the field of penology,
corrections, law enforcement, sociology, law, education, social work, or medicine.
Effective January 9, 2012.
