PROBATION/PAROLE. Provides for changes in the qualifications needed to serve on the
parole board. (1/9/12)
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 15:574.2(A)(1), relative to the Board of Parole; to provide for2
minimum qualifications of members; to provide for appointment of members; and3
to provide for related matters.4
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5
Section 1. R.S. 15:574.2(A)(1) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:6
ยง574.2. Board of Parole; membership; qualifications; vacancies; compensation;7
domicile; venue; meetings; quorum; panels; powers and duties;8
transfer of property to board; representation of applicants before the9
board; prohibitions10
A.(1) A board of parole, hereinafter referred to as "the board," is hereby11
created in the Department of Public Safety and Corrections. It shall consist of seven12
members appointed by the governor, one of whom shall be the chairman of the13
board, and all of whom shall serve at the pleasure of the governor.  All members14
shall possess not less than five years actual experience in the field of penology,15
corrections, law enforcement, sociology, law, education, social work, medicine,16
or a combination thereof, or have previously served at least one full term on the17 SB NO. 52

board, or have been employed by or have been a volunteer of, the Department1
of Corrections in the last five years. One of the seven members shall be appointed2
from a list of at least three names submitted by Victims and Citizens Against Crime,3
Inc., and at least three names submitted by Crimefighters, LLC. Each4
appointment by the governor shall be submitted to the Senate for confirmation.5

Section 2.  The provisions of this Act shall become effective January 9, 2012.7

B. Gautreaux (SB 52)
Present law creates a 7-member board of parole board appointed by the governor.
Proposed law requires that members of the parole board possess not less than five years
experience in the field of penology, corrections, law enforcement, sociology, law, education,
social work, medicine, or a combination thereof, or have previously served at least one full
term on the board, or have been employed by or been a volunteer of the Dept. of Corrections
in the last 5 years.
Present law provides that at least one member of the board be appointed by the governor
from a list of three names submitted by the Victims and Citizens Against Crime, Inc.
Provides for confirmation by the Senate.
Proposed law retains present law and includes the submission of at least three names by
Crimefighters, LLC. 
Effective January 9, 2012.
