SENATE BILL NO. 701

STUDENTS. Provides relative to options available to certain high school dropouts pursuant
to court order. (8/15/10)
AN ACT1
To enact R.S. 17:221.4(C) and (D), relative to education; to provide relative to options2
available to certain high school dropouts pursuant to court order; and to provide for3
related matters.4
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5
Section 1.  R.S. 17:221.4(C) is hereby enacted to read as follows: 6

C. A student, under eighteen years of age, who withdraws from school,9
voluntarily or involuntarily, prior to graduating from high school, shall exercise10
one of the following options within one hundred twenty days of leaving school:11
(1) Re-enroll in school and make continual progress toward completing12
the requirements for high school graduation.13
(2) Enroll in a high school equivalency diploma program and make14
continual progress toward completing the requirements for earning such15
diploma.16
(3) Enlist in the Louisiana National Guard or a branch of the United17 SB NO. 701

States Armed Forces, with a commitment for at least two years of service, and1
earn a high school equivalency diploma during such service period.2
D. The provisions of Subsection C of this Section shall only apply to3
students who have been ruled to be truants, pursuant to the provisions of4
Chapter 15 of Title VII of the Louisiana Children's Code, by a court of5
competent jurisdiction and ordered by the court to comply with the provisions6
thereof. 7

Proposed law provides that a student under the age of eighteen who withdraws from school,
voluntarily or involuntarily, prior to graduating, shall exercise one of the following options:
(1)Re-enroll in school and make continual progress toward completing the requirements
for high school graduation.
(2)Enroll in a high school equivalency diploma program and make continual progress
toward completing the requirements for earning such diploma.
(3)Enlist in the Louisiana National Guard or a branch of the United States Armed
Forces, with a commitment for at least two years of service, and earn a high school
equivalency diploma during such service period.
Provides that proposed law shall only apply to students who have been ruled to be truants,
pursuant to the provisions of Chapter 15 of Title VII of the Louisiana Children's Code, by
a court of competent jurisdiction and ordered by the court to comply with 	proposed law.
Effective August 15, 2010.
