Expresses condolences upon the death of Clarence Eugene Faulk, Jr. A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1 To express the sincere condolences of the Legislature of Louisiana upon the death of2 Clarence Eugene Faulk, Jr.3 WHEREAS, it was with deep regret and profound sorrow that the members of the4 Legislature of Louisiana learned of the death of Clarence Eugene Faulk, Jr., on Friday,5 March 5, 2010; and6 WHEREAS, Mr. Faulk was born January 9, 1909 in West Monroe and lived to see7 a century of life in his beloved state of Louisiana; and8 WHEREAS, after two years at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee,9 he transferred to the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri where he met his10 loving wife, Louise; and11 WHEREAS, upon returning to Louisiana, Mr. Faulk became publisher of the Ruston12 Daily Leader, a position he maintained for thirty-two years; and13 WHEREAS, although he was not drafted into World War II because of a serious eye14 condition, he served as a first lieutenant in the Home Guard, and was a member of the War15 Price and Rationing Board, and was chairman of the Lincoln Parish effort for the United16 States Savings Bond Program, and later became an unofficial historian on Camp Ruston, a17 prisoner of war camp that held thousands of German and Italian prisoners during the war;18 SCR NO. 21 SLS 10RS-1087 ORIGINAL Page 2 of 3 and1 WHEREAS, he brought the city of Ruston its first radio station in 1947 and managed2 it for twenty-one years; and3 WHEREAS, he served for many years as the president of the Louisiana Press4 Association and the Louisiana Association of Broadcasters; and5 WHEREAS, of great importance to him were his memberships in Trinity Methodist6 Church, where he served many functions, including teaching Sunday school for twelve years,7 and the Ruston Kiwanis Club, where he was a member for seventy years and served as a8 president; and9 WHEREAS, his devotion to the community of Ruston was wide and varied and he10 was actively involved in the Ruston-Lincoln Parish Centennial, the Peach Festival, the11 Lincoln Parish Housing Authority which he chaired for twenty-nine years, and the Lincoln12 Parish Library; and13 WHEREAS, in good times and in bad he was a faithful supporter and contributor to14 the Department of Journalism at Louisiana Tech University, where he founded the Clarence15 and Louise Faulk Chair of Journalism; and16 WHEREAS, Mr. Faulk's one hundredth birthday in January 2009 was the occasion17 of a festive party in which he received a Certificate of Honor from Louisiana Tech18 University, an Expression of Commendation along with a Letter of Special Recognition from19 Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, and a proclamation from the mayor of Ruston designating20 January 9 th "Clarence Faulk Day"; and21 WHEREAS, as he was a well recognized source of oral history about Ruston and22 North Louisiana, he greatly enjoyed telling stories that were filled with historical gems, and23 he became known as an expert on the 1934 ambush of Bonnie and Clyde, since as a young24 newspaper reporter he covered the story on the scene; and25 WHEREAS, those who knew him best in business and in his personal life recognize26 that his love for Ruston and his place in the community were major driving forces in his life;27 and28 WHEREAS, the memory of Mr. Clarence Faulk will remain eternal in the hearts and29 minds of his family, friends, and all of those who loved him.30 SCR NO. 21 SLS 10RS-1087 ORIGINAL Page 3 of 3 THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby1 express its sincere and heartfelt condolences upon the death of Mr. Clarence Faulk, Jr.2 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the3 family of Mr. Clarence Faulk, Jr.4 The original instrument and the following digest, which constitutes no part of the legislative instrument, were prepared by McHenry Lee.
