Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2010 ENROLLED SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 106 BY SENATOR CHEEK A RESOLUTION To recognize Thursday, June 3, 2010, as Girl Scouts of the USA Day at the Louisiana State Capitol. WHEREAS, Girl Scouts of the USA is the world's largest preeminent organization dedicated solely to all girls everywhere helping build character and gain skills for success in the real world; and WHEREAS, in 2009-2010, the Louisiana Girl Scout Councils served almost thirty-six thousand girls in six program levels; and WHEREAS, we honor the Girl Scout's ninety-eighth anniversary and Juliette Gordon Lowe, the founder of Girl Scouts in 1912; and WHEREAS, founded on March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, by Juliette Gordon Lowe, Girl Scouts' membership has grown to nearly four million members throughout the United States and around the world; and WHEREAS, we recognize and commend the two Girl Scout Councils of Louisiana; The Girl Scouts of Louisiana - Pines to the Gulf and Girl Scouts Louisiana East; and WHEREAS, through the Girl Scouts of the USA, girls can see the world and their place in it by learning the importance of personal responsibility, the value of goal-setting, the spirit of teamwork, and the thrill of accomplishment; and WHEREAS, throughout its distinguished history, Girl Scouting has welcomed girls and women from every background to join, and has inspired them with courage, confidence, and character to make the world a better place; and WHEREAS, the Girl Scout program is based on four fundamental goals that encourage girls to develop to their full potential; relate to others with increasing understanding, skill, and respect; develop a meaningful set of values to guide their actions and to provide for sound decision making; and contribute to the improvement of society; and SR NO. 106 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, through the guidance of trained adults, girls between the ages of five and seventeen are offered a variety of opportunities to explore numerous topics, including leadership, math, science, technology, health, fitness, sports, environmental education, the arts, and global awareness; and WHEREAS, the Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest national award in Girl Scouting, with national standards, it represents girls' time, leadership, creativity and effort contributed to making their community better, and young women who have earned the 2010 Girl Scout Gold Award and have become community leaders are: Lindsey Vallot, Lafayette; Ashley Boykin and Lauren Brown, Shreveport; Bonnie Moody, Leesville; Wendy Kussmann, Lake Charles; Charlene O'Neill, Ragley; Leigh Griffin, Destrehan; Gillian Maris Jones, New Orleans; Sarah Mathews, Mandeville; and Mandy McNamara, Destrehan; and WHEREAS, during the past ninety-eight years, over fifty-five million American women have participated in Girl Scouting, and this enduring tradition continues to strengthen individual communities and our society as a whole. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby recognize Thursday, June 3, 2010, as Girl Scouts of the USA Day at the Louisiana State Capitol, does hereby commend the organization for its many contributions and continued dedication to girls in the USA and around the world, and does hereby welcome members of the Girl Scouts of the USA as they visit the capitol on this special and memorable occasion. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be submitted to the Girl Scouts of the USA and to Girl Scout Councils in Louisiana. PRESIDENT OF THE SENATE
