SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 116

SENATE. Recognizes Tuesday, June 8, 2010, as "Red and White Day" at the Louisiana
Legislature.
A RESOLUTION1
To recognize Tuesday, June 8, 2010 as Red and White Day at the Louisiana Legislature.2
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated,3
for its outstanding achievements and generous community service and to recognize Tuesday,4
June 8, 2010, as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority "Red and White Day" at the Legislature of5
Louisiana; and 6
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was founded on January 13, 1913, by7
twenty-two collegiate women at Howard University who were eager to use their collective8
strength to promote academic excellence, to provide scholarships and support to those in9
need, to educate and stimulate participation in the establishment of positive public policy,10
and to highlight issues and find solutions to problems in their communities; and11
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority was incorporated in 1930 and is a private,12
nonprofit organization that provides assistance and support through established programs13
in local communities and throughout the world; and14
WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority is a sisterhood of more than two hundred15
thousand predominantly black, college-educated women, and the sorority has become more16
than nine hundred chapters located in the United States, England, Japan, Germany, the17
Virgin Islands, Bermuda, the Bahamas, and the Republic of Korea; and18 SR NO. 116

WHEREAS, members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority represent a unique segment of1
the nation's demographic profile; and2
WHEREAS, the major programs of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority are based on the3
organization's Five Point Programmatic Thrust, which focuses on economic development,4
educational development, international awareness and involvement, physical and mental5
health, and political awareness and involvement; and6
WHEREAS, the organizational structure and governance of Delta Sigma Theta7
Sorority is invested in the Grand Chapter, which meets at a national convention biennially,8
and regional conferences are held in the seven geographic regions of the organization during9
non-convention years; and10
WHEREAS, the success of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority's public service programs has11
depended upon the commendation for their commitment to community service and academic12
achievement and their quest for excellence in all endeavors in their lives; and13
WHEREAS, approximately twenty thousand members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority14
will convene in New Orleans, Louisiana on July 29th thru August 4th, 2010, for the Delta's15
fiftieth National Convention.16
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana17
does hereby recognize Tuesday, June 8, 2010, as Delta Sigma Theta Sorority "Red and18
White Day" at the Louisiana Legislature, does hereby commend the women of Delta Sigma19
Theta Sorority, Incorporated, for their exceptional achievements and manifold contributions,20
and does hereby extend enduring appreciation to the organization and its members for the21
tremendous honor and pride that they bring to their local communities, the state of22
Louisiana, and the United States of America.23
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the24
president of the Grand Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and to the25
regional director for the Southwest Region of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.26 SR NO. 116
