SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 138
BY SENATOR JACKSON
A RESOLUTION
To commend and congratulate Lee Hedges on his induction into the Louisiana Sports Hall
of Fame.
WHEREAS, induction into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame is one of the greatest
honors that may be bestowed upon any Louisiana sports legend; and
WHEREAS, Coach Lee Hedges is considered a coaching legend not only in Caddo
Parish, but also throughout the state of Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, members of the Louisiana Sports Writers Association began planning
a Hall of Fame to honor the state's outstanding athletes and coaches as far back as 1951, but
the first election to the hall was not held until 1958; and
WHEREAS, a thirty-member Louisiana Sports Writers Association committee
selected the 2010 inductees, considering 121 nominees from 22 different sports categories
on a 25-page ballot; and
WHEREAS, the 2010 eight new inductees will raise the total of Sports Hall of Fame
members to 277 men and women honored since the first induction class who were enshrined
in 1959 after their election a year earlier; and
WHEREAS, this induction marks the second such honor for the modest former Fair
Park All-State halfback, Lee Hedges; and
WHEREAS, over almost a thirty year career as a head coach, Hedges touched four
of the most historic schools in Shreveport, serving as head coach at three (Byrd, Woodlawn
and Captain Shreve) and taking each of those to the state championship game in the state's
largest classification, guiding Byrd to the 1956 state finals, Woodlawn to the 1965
championship game, and Captain Shreve to the state title in 1973, the last time a public
school from Shreveport won a state crown; and SR NO. 138	ENROLLED

WHEREAS, in twenty-seven seasons as a high school head coach, Hedges posted
twenty-four winning seasons, reaching the playoffs fourteen of those times and capturing
eight district championships; and
WHEREAS, his composite career record stands at 217-92-5 (.698), and his two-
hundred and seventeen victories still remain the most in Shreveport-Bossier City high school
football history despite the twenty-six years that elapsed since the end of his eighteen year
tenure at Captain Shreve; and
WHEREAS, in 1965 he took an assistant football coaching position at Louisiana
Tech University, and it was there that he began to refine his coaching style; and
WHEREAS, he credits that one year with Coach Joe Aillet at Louisiana Tech with
teaching him the technique of analyzing film, thus starting Hedges' love affair with film
study, a trait not lost on Hedges' assistant coaches or his players throughout his coaching
career, as he was determined to teach them the mental part that carried them where the
physical part couldn't; and
WHEREAS, Hedges coached future NFL players as head coach at each school,
including players like Bo Harris and state Hall of Fame members Pat Studstill and Terry
Bradshaw; and
WHEREAS, Lee Hedges has been very good to Caddo Parish and in turn Caddo
Parish Stadium was renamed Lee Hedges Stadium in October 2000; and
WHEREAS, the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana is proud to honor Coach Lee
Hedges as one of the most successful coaches in the history of Louisiana.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend and congratulate Lee Hedges, coaching legend, on being inducted

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution shall be presented to
Lee Hedges.
