SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 141

A RESOLUTION
To commend the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Allied Health
Professions for forty years of exemplary health care education in the professions of
audiology, cardiovascular technology, clinical laboratory sciences, occupational
therapy, physical therapy, rehabilitation counseling, respiratory therapy, and
speech-language pathology.
WHEREAS, on April 2, 1970, the Louisiana State University Board of Supervisors
approved a request by the Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans to
establish a School of Allied Health Professions; and
WHEREAS, at its founding, the School of Allied Health Professionals was the fifth
school within the Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans; and
WHEREAS, the School of Allied Health Professions became operational on July 1,
1970, and its first class of students was in 1971; and
WHEREAS, the School of Allied Health Professions has graduated more than six
thousand health care providers, and these graduates have achieved a ninety-seven percent
passing rate on professional licensure examinations; and
WHEREAS, the School of Allied Health Professions provides education in eight
health care fields: audiology, cardiovascular technology, clinical laboratory sciences,
occupational therapy, physical therapy, rehabilitation counseling, respiratory therapy, and
speech-language pathology; and
WHEREAS, the School of Allied Health Professions also includes the Human
Development Center, a member of a national network of sixty-seven University Centers for
Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research, and Service; and
WHEREAS, the mission of the School of Allied Health Professions in New Orleans
is to provide educational programs for students enrolled in the allied health disciplines, to
contribute to the body of knowledge in the allied health sciences through research and
scholarship, and to provide patient care and community outreach of the highest quality for
the citizens of Louisiana; and SR NO. 141	ENROLLED

WHEREAS, in the spring of 2010, the School of Allied Health Professions had their
highest student enrollment, with four hundred four students, in the past forty years; and
WHEREAS, student enrollment at the School of Allied Health Professions has
increased by fifty-one percent since the spring of 2005 and sixty-three percent since the
spring of 2006; and
WHEREAS, student applicants to the School of Allied Health Professions have
increased by twenty-four percent since 2005 and one hundred twenty-three percent since
2006; and
WHEREAS, the faculty of the School of Allied Health Professions continues to
expand the body of research in the areas of clinical laboratory sciences, speech-language
pathology, audiology, respiratory therapy, and rehabilitation counseling; and
WHEREAS, the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Allied
Health Professions merits a special measure of commendation for the tremendous honor and
pride that this fine institution brings to its faculty, staff, and students, the city of New
Orleans, the Louisiana State University System, and the state of Louisiana.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana
does hereby commend the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of
Allied Health Professions for forty years of exemplary health care education and does hereby
extend best wishes for the school's continued success in the future.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
dean of the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Allied Health
Professions.
